"Is it alright if I...kiss you?"

It was a perfectly acceptable question, N thought. He'd seen people kiss at least a few times, and from what he could gather, it seemed to be an expression of affection, or intimacy... He was close with Hilda, he figured, so it was fine if he asked. And she agreed to it, so everything seemed to be going well.

But even if he had a basic idea of what a kiss meant, he didn't exactly know how he should be going about it. He wished Hilda could have been the one to initiate it, but she was waiting expectantly with her eyes closed, and asking now would be embarrassing.

N tried to think quickly about what he should be doing. Well, he should probably close his eyes like Hilda was...and then he was supposed to...lean in, right? He tried that out, but being that his eyes were closed, he missed and his lips only managed inches above Hilda's head. He tried again, lower this time, but the brims of their hats knocked together.

"Hmm...N?" Hilda asked suddenly, opening her eyes.

"Y-Yes...?" N asked. He couldn't have already ruined his chance, could he?

Hilda smirked slightly. "You've never kissed anyone, huh?"

N frowned. He hadn't, but...people his age usually had kissed someone by now, hadn't they? Wouldn't Hilda think him strange if he hadn't? Would she not want to kiss him anymore? "...Um...well...o-of course I have!" he lied.

Hilda's smirk grew. "Oh yeah? Who?" she asked, clearly not believing him at all.

"W-Well, I mean...it was...a girl..." N said.

"What was she like?" Hilda asked.

"She...sh-she had a face...with a mouth...that I kissed!" N said. "And she had hair, and eyes, and a nose..."

"What was her name?" Hilda asked.

N glanced upwards and attempted to think up a name. "Um...Sky. Yes. Her name was Sky," he said. "But anyway, it's not really...it's not really relevant about the kind of person I may or may not have had an affectionate...intimate...moment...with."

"But I'd like to know!" Hilda said. "Like, what if she was prettier than me? I'd have to be jealous, then."

"She couldn't have been prettier than you..." N said. "You're...well, the prettiest girl I know..."

Hilda grinned at him. "Thank you, N. And it doesn't matter if you've kissed someone or not..." she said.

Hilda stood on her toes, and their lips met without missing entirely or having their hats hit each other...and it was wonderful.

"...Because you know, I'd love to be the first."
