The End and a Beginning

Chapter 10

Waking Up

The sun shined brightly down on the junkyard, after the last three days of rain. The Jellicles were caught up with the events that lead to the gold queen and silver tabby resting in the infirmary.

Inside the infirmary there were rows of beds that could be closed off by curtains. A curtain was pulled to cover two beds that were occupied from the rest of the infirmary. The Gumbie cat slowly pulled back the curtain to enter the small room and closed the curtain behind her. She looked at the sleeping cats. She approached the sleeping queen and slowly sat down on the side of the bed, as the young queen began to stir.

"Jenny," Demeter called as she slowly opened her eyes and tried to focus on the Gumbie cat. "Where am I?"

"You're back in the Junkyard." Jenny replied. "You have been asleep for about four days."

"How did I get here?"

"Bomby, Munk and I went out to find you." The older queen replied. "Bomby and I found you in an alleyway in Pollicle territory."

"Where's Bomby?"

"She's fine." Jenny answered. "She is outside."

"What about Munk?" Demeter questioned as the Gumbie cat lowered her head and looked over to her right.

The gold queen looked over to her left side and noticed another bed. On top of that bed was a young silver tom with bandages covering most of his arms and some on his legs and torso.

"While Bomby and I got you out of the alley, Munk fought off two Pollicles." Jenny explained. "He has been asleep for about three days."

"Is he badly hurt?" Demeter asked looking the silver tabby over, as the Gumbie cat noticed the concern in her eyes.

"No, he has some deep wounds but nothing life threatening." Jenny explained, looking at the silver tom then back down at the young queen as she felt movement from where she sat. "Dem dear," Jenny called as the young queen sat up. The Gumbie cat held out her arms trying to stop the young queen from getting up.

"I'm fine Jenny." Demeter stated as she pushed away the Gumbie cat's arms and placed her feet on the floor below.

"But," Jenny started placing her paws on the young queen's shoulders trying to keep the young queen from go any further.

"Jenny," Demeter called, interrupting the Gumbie cat as she faced the older cat. "You said I was sleeping for about four days. My injuries are healed. I don't need to stay in this bed any longer."

The older queen was quiet for a moment before sighing in defeat. "You win."

"I know you mean well Jenny." Demeter stated. "It's just that I can't stay here forever."

"I understand." Jenny replied with a slight smile that the young queen returned. "Alright then, now what should we do?"

"Food sounds really good right now." Demeter replied.

"You probably want to go outside as well." Jenny suggested.

"That would be nice." Demeter replied.

"Alright," Jenny sighed as she stood. "Let's see what I can do."

"What?" Demeter asked, confused by what the Gumbie cat just said. "Can't I just leave and find Bomby by myself." Demeter suggested as she stood.

"What if something happens?" Jenny asked.

"Jenny, I think you are being too protective." Demeter stated.

"Maybe, but I always think that it's better being safe than sorry." Jenny explained.

"I think so to, but I'm fine." Demeter stated walking past the Gumbie cat and up to the curtain with the older cat right behind her.

"Demeter." A female voice called as the gold queen and the Gumbie cat passed through the curtain. The queens looked over to where the voice came from and saw a red queen walking towards them. "Dem I'm so sorry." Bomby apologized as she embraced the gold queen. "I take back all those mean things I said about you. I didn't know what I was saying. I'm sorry. Can you ever forgive me?"

"Bomby." Demeter called, as she returned the red queen's hug and then pulled away to face the queen. "I understand and I forgive you."

"So we are still friends?" Bomby asked wiping away forming tears.

"Still friends." Demeter replied with a smile that was returned by the red queen.

"Thank you Dem." The red queen sighed as she hugged her friend.

"You're welcome." The gold queen replied as she returned the hug.

"Now, let's go get something to eat." Bomby suggested, breaking the hug.

"Okay." Demeter agreed exited to get some food.

"So where should we go?" The red queen asked as the two friends left the infirmary.

"Well, that was easy." Jenny stated surprised about how fast the queens left. "Oh well," She sighed as she went back through the curtain to check up on the silver tom.

The next day was sunny and warm. A gold queen sat on the tire and looked over the other cats.

"Demeter!" A female voice called. The gold queen looked where the voice came from and saw a red queen running to her.

"Bomby, what's wrong?" Demeter asked as the red queen gasped for air.

"It's Munk." Bomby stated. "Jenny wants to see you."

The gold queen quickly bolted off the tire and quickly went to the infirmary as a red queen followed.

"Jenny," Demeter called, as she slowly entered the infirmary. The Gumbie cat came out from behind a curtain and looked at the two young queens. "You wanted to see me."

"Yes, I did. Come here, dear." Jenny ordered, as she signaled the young queen to come with her paw. The golden queen slowly approached the Gumbie cat as the older cat pulled back the curtain. The golden queen looked through the curtain. Her eyes widen as they settled on a silver tabby. "He'll be waking up soon." Jenny stated as the golden queen looked back at her. "Go on." Jenny sighed as the young queen turned back to the tom and slowly approached the bed.

The gold queen stood beside the bed where her friend lied. Her attention came to his eyes as they slowly began to open.

"Munk," Demeter called setting down on the side of his bed.

"Dem," The silver tabby replied, looking up at his golden friend. "I'm glad that you're alright."

A smile grew on the queen's face as she lowered her head. "You didn't have to come after me."

"Of course I had to." He replied, as the queen looked back at him. "You're my friend Dem. I could never forgive myself if I let anything happen to you."

"Thanks, Munk." She sighed with a smile as she looked down at her paws. A silver paw covered hers.

"Dem," Munkustrap called, making the young queen looked up at him. "Why did you run away?" He asked, with concern in his bright eyes.

The young queen's smile quickly disappeared. She feared that he would ask about that. "I ran away because I thought that if I would go away you and Bomby would stop fighting." Demeter explained lowering her head and watching as the silver paw tightened its grip on the golden paw.

"Bomby and I have been fighting years before you joined the tribe. You running away would not have changed that." The silver tom informed.

"But Bomby said that it is my fault." The gold queen stated, looking back up at the silver tom.

"It's not your fault. Bomby just said that because she never noticed our problem until you came."

"I'm sorry." Demeter mumbled, lowering her head again.

"For what?" Munkustrap asked. "You did nothing wrong."

"It's all my fault that you got hurt when you had to fight those Pollicles." She answered, tears slowly forming in her eyes.

"Dem," The silver tabby called, as the queen slowly looked up at him. "Listen, injuries can heal, but death can't. I'll be alright."

"I know." She sighed, with a small smile. The silver tom smiled back at the queen, until it was interrupted by a yawn. The young queen's smile grew brighter.

"I'm sorry about that." Munkustrap replied.

"It's alright." Dem sighed. "Tired?" She asked as the tom yawned again.

"Apparently."

"You should get some rest then." Demeter suggested, as the silver tom nodded his head in agreement and slowly closed his eyes.

The golden queen slowly stood and quietly walked through the curtain.

"So, what happened?" Bomby asked, standing about a yard away, leaning against the wall.

"Nothing." Demeter replied. "Where's Jenny?" She asked, looking around and not finding the Gumbie cat.

"She went out with Skimble to get something to eat." Bomby answered, crossing her arms over her chest. "We're watching Munk until she gets back."

"He's sleeping now." Demeter stated.

"You think he's sleeping." Bomby informed as she leaning forward and pointing a finger at the gold queen. "He could just be faking and waiting for the right time to sneak away and join a street gang and kill everyone."

"I think you saw too many horror films." Demeter replied looking at her friend with wide eyes and looked like she was about to walk away.

"Maybe," The red queen sighed, placing her right paw under her chin and her left arm under her right elbow. "But oh well." She sighed as she placed her arms back at her sides and shrugged her shoulders. The gold queen rolled her eyes as she went and sat against the wall.
