She's all laid up in bed with a broken heart
Rachel curled up in her bed with a sketchpad, trying to forget everything: the date, the kiss, the fight, the breakup. She shouldn't have trusted her heart to a boy.
While I'm drinking jack all alone at my local bar
And we don't know how we got into this mad situation
Only doing things out of frustration
Nico had his head in his hands. The barman narrowed his eyes. "You all right, sir?" Nico nodded. He wanted to bang his head against the counter. How could he be so stupid? And now he'd lost his job, on top of everything.
Trying to make it work but man these times are hard
She needs me know, but I can't seem to find the time
Nico knew Rachel would be at home, crying. That's where she always went. He knew she needed him, but it would be so much easier to just stay here, get drunk, and forget everything.
It was that bad sense of when to quit that got him fired, Nico recalled.
I got a new job now in the unemployment line
And we don't know how we got into this mess, this is the gods test
Someone help us 'cause we're doing our best
Nico rose, staggering a little. He was doing his best. But it was time to do better. He fought down the coward inside of him and made his decision.
Before he could get out the door, the barman glared at him. "Keys. Gimme yer keys. I can't let ya drive drunk." Grudgingly, Nico handed them over, and stormed out of the pub. He thanked the gods that it was only five blocks to Rachel's.
Trying to make it work but man these times are hard
We're gonna start by drinkin' up cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night,
Saying things we haven't for a while, a while, yeah
We're smiling but we're close to tears
Even after all these years we just now got the feeling, got the meaning
For the first time
Nico knocked on the door. A few minutes passed, and then a bedraggled Rachel opened it. Nico pulled out a cheap bottle of wine he'd had on hand. Rachel smiled. Without speaking, she led him inside and they sat on the couch. Nico opened the bottle.
"I just wish you had more time to live," Rachel said suddenly.
"I'm doing my best," Nico replied.
She smiled. "I know." Nico felt a warm feeling spread over him—happiness. He hadn't felt happiness in a long, long time.
She's in line at the door with her head held high
I just lost another job but I didn't lose my flight
But we both know how we're gonna make it work when you're hurt
Pick yourself up and get kicked to the dirt
Nico was waiting in his room for Rachel. He'd just lost yet another job due to drinking. Of course. Always drinking.
He had thought he had fixed things, but then they'd gone and crumbled under him again.
Trying to make it work but man these times are hard
And we're gonna start by drinking up cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night
Doing things we haven't for a while, a while, yeah
Rachel was cuddled close to Nico. There was silence.
We're smiling but we're close to tears
Even after all these years,
We just now got the feeling that we're meeting
For the first time
Oh, these times are hard,
And they're making us crazy
Don't give up on me baby
"I love you."
Oh, these times are hard,
Yeah they're making us crazy
Don't give up on me baby
