Untouchable, like a distant diamond sky

I'm reachin' out and I just can't tell you why

"Have you ever loved someone you weren't supposed to?" Weird questions like this weren't uncommon from Selena, and Taylor didn't even look up from her guitar to answer her.

"Apparently, or I wouldn't be writing this song."

"No, I don't mean it just not working out between you, or Romeo and Juliet kind of stuff. Just, like..." Selena paused and Taylor stopped scribbling in her notebook. She watched Selena stare out the window next to her and pull at her sleeves until they hooked around her thumbs. Taylor leaned back in her own chair, but she didn't close her notebook. If they got too serious, Selena would bail and change the subject. If Taylor kept it casual, she may finally have a chance of finishing this conversation. "You can't love them. Not that you shouldn't, or you won't, but you just can't because the world just doesn't work that way. It wasn't built for you to love them. Like, you loving them would throw the entire universe off balance. It just..." Selena sighed and looked away from the window and down at the dark blue sleeves of her hoodie. "I can't explain it."

"Do they love you back?" Selena's head jerked up and she looked at Taylor with wide eyes, but Taylor just raised an eyebrow at her. "What? You honestly thought I wouldn't know we were talking about you?" She asked with a grin. Selena stuck her tongue out at her and Taylor laughed. Casual. Selena smiled and sighed, turning her attention back to the window.

"No, of course not. And, I mean, it's not like they're supposed to, or I expect them to." Taylor nodded and ran her fingers over the fretboard.

"Who is it, Sel?" Selena looked up at her with red, watery eyes and Taylor held her breath. They never got any further than this. Selena always changed the subject, insisting that they go out for ice cream or watch a movie, anything to get away from this. And Taylor would go along with it and wait for the next time she brought it up because she certainly wasn't going to push Selena into telling her.

She had a feeling she knew the answer anyways.

Selena sniffed and wiped her nose with her sleeve.

"Demi." Taylor wasn't shocked at all. She set her guitar and notebook on the floor and squeezed into Selena's chair. She kissed her temple and looped an arm around the girl's back and held her close against her side. Selena leaned into her and played with the hem of Taylor's tank top, wiping away her smeared eyeliner when Taylor wasn't looking. "I love her so much, Taylor. I love her so much and I'll never have her." Taylor squeezed her eyes shut and ignored the way her stomach flipped when Selena's lips brushed against her collarbone. She rested her chin on the top of the smaller girl's head and held her tighter.

"I know, baby."
