He watches her as she lies sleeping their first night back. He can't sleep, himself. The bed is too soft, the noises and smells he's gotten used to over the past year aren't there. The only thing that's still the same is her.
And he knows that soon even that will change. They're back now, back in civilisation, and she won't need him anymore. She's beautiful and strong and passionate, and why would she want a geek like him when she can have anyone she wants. For the past year they've had to rely on each other; they've had no one else, but now they're home and there seem to be people everywhere. He almost misses being back in the past, when it was just the two of them.
It's funny, in an ironic sort of way, he thinks. When they'd been in the past he was the one who always knew they'd get home. She'd gotten mad at him sometimes over that, telling him to be realistic, that he had to accept that this was their life now. It was easier after they`d started sleeping together, but he still couldn`t totally let go of that dream of the anomaly showing up again. Now that it had a part of him wishes they were still back there, back in that forest that had been home to the best and worst time of his life.
She shifts, curling up on herself and crying out softly, reaching for him even as she continues to sleep. When her hand touches nothing but empty air she wakes with a start, looking frantically around the room. He sees the confusion and panic in her eyes as they frantically scan the room. When she spots him sitting in the shadows the panic fades and she gazes at him, need in her eyes. He slides into bed beside her, holding her close and resting her head on his chest so that she can hear his heart beating as he has so many nights before. As she drifts off to sleep, secure in the knowledge that he will keep watch over her, he wonders how many more of these nights he will have with her.
For the first time he understands what his Mam meant when she said "Connor, be careful what you wish for, for some day you might just get it."
