It had been years since Reid had seen Jason Gideon, but he recognized his former mentor as soon as they met eyes across a small diner. Gideon recognized him too. Reid could see the emotions flit across the older man's face even before Gideon stood up and walked over. "Spencer?"
Reid's hand dipped into his pocket and he clutched at his own one-year NA medallion. Gideon's leaving had sparked his attempt to get clean; seeing Gideon again sent so many emotions running through him that he wanted a shot of Dilaudid more than he had in a long time. "Hi, Gideon," he managed to say.
"How've you been, Spencer?" Gideon asked. "Still with the BAU?"
Reid nodded, not quite trusting his voice that far. "Wha- What about you?" he asked after an awkward moment of silence.
"Searching," Gideon said simply. "Do you want to sit down? Have some coffee?"
"I- I can't," Reid said. "We- We're here on a case; I'm just canvassing the area."
Gideon nodded. "I understand." He turned to go back to his table.
"Gideon?"
He turned back around, eyebrows raised.
"After the case is over... I'd like to talk."
Gideon smiled and looked down briefly before meeting Reid's eyes again. "I'd like that." He scrawled a phone number on a napkin. "Call me when you're ready."
