Standing up from the couch Hotch began to walk around the room, feeling Emily's eyes on him with every move he made.
"I don't think this is going to work out anymore," he began. "I think we're too different and I don't see it going anywhere. If we continue I fear it will just be a waste of both of our times when we could be out looking for other people we are compatible with."
Hotch glanced at the brunette sitting on the couch and watched as her eyes filled with tears and her bottom lip trembled.
"I'm sorry," she whispered slowly, "are you breaking up with me?" She asked quietly.
Avoiding her gaze Hotch continued to move around the room. He knew this was going to be difficult. "I believe it would be better if we ended things now before Jack becomes too involved."
"Before Jack becomes too involved?" Emily cried out in frustration. "How about before I become too involved? Did you stop to think at any point this entire year that we've been doing this that maybe you should end things with me before I get too involved? Before I put my all into us? Did you ever think of that Hotch?" Emily rose from the couch and walked quickly up to the pacing man. She wasn't letting him go easily. She couldn't. She wouldn't. "Will you stop walking and talk to me please?"
Hotch continued his journey around the room but as two small hands grasped his arm and twirled him around he knew he had to face her. Hotch struggled to breathe as he looked into Emily's big brown beautiful watery eyes as she tried to will her tears away. He could see she was struggling to keep them from falling.
Grasping his face between her hands Emily brought Hotch's face down to her level and pleaded with him with her eyes.
"Just tell me what I have to do to make this right. What do I have to change? What do you need from me? Tell me and I'll do it," she sobbed. A few tears escaped her eyes as she continued. "I will do anything to be with you. I just need you to tell me Hotch."
Hotch clamped his hand over hers and pulled away. "I'm sorry Emily but it won't be enough." He slowly dropped her hands and began to walk towards the door.
Emily stood rooted to her spot as she felt her heart breaking. "I love you," she blurted out. "I love you," she repeated slowly realizing this was the first time she has ever said those words to him, and she silently wondered why she never expressed them before. Hotch halted at her confession and turned towards her slightly.
Emily tried to regain her composure but tears were freely streaming down her face and her bottom lip still trembled. "I love you more than everything in this world combined. How can you possibly stand there and tell me that that's not enough?" she wondered out loud.
Their eyes locked and Hotch struggled to keep his voice hard and stern, he knew his next words were going to destroy her. "It's not enough because I don't love you that way."
"Bullshit," Emily screamed. "That's complete and utter bullshit. Don't stand there and lie to me Hotch. I know you better than that and I know that you love me as much as I love you. Why are you doing this?"
"I'm sorry Emily," he responded truthfully then headed for the door and shut it firmly behind him. He headed down the stairs and out into the cold night air before stopping to breathe. Hotch rubbed his hand over his face and was shocked to feel the dampness. He didn't know when he started to cry but all he could wonder was what did he just do?
Emily contemplated rushing after him but she couldn't breathe. She dropped to the floor and sobbed uncontrollably wondering what in the world just happened. How did she lose the one man in the world who was made for her? What was she going to do without him?
