Chapter 3: The Bonds That Bring Us Closer
"I…uh… kinda need your help with something." Martin scratched the back of his head and looked down at the ground sheepishly.
Sam put a hand on Clover and Alex's shoulders and started pushing them towards the doors of the library. "Yeah? Well, sorry. We can't help you we're kinda busy."
Alex turned on her heel to face Sam and whispered, "Sammy, come on. Let's at least hear what he has to say."
Sam hissed, "N-O. No, Alex. I don't want him sticking around." She attempted again to push the other two girls out the door and succeeded. Before the doors closed behind them, Clover looked back at Martin.
Martin slumped into a nearby chair, put his head in his hands and said, "Crud. What if they won't help me. No. I can't fail you Diana. I'll do whatever it takes to get you back."
Outside the library Clover put her hands on her hips and said, "Sammy, that wasn't very nice. What if he really needed our help?"
Sam said crossly, "Oh. Like hunting down a non- existent UFO that his boss doesn't believe in so she won't give them the gear needed to CATCH a UFO?"
Alex whispered, "Ouch. Harsh Sammy."
At that moment Martin stepped out of the library door and said, "Look, guys. Or more specifically, Sam. I know we haven't been on the best of terms. But PLEASE hear me out!"
Sam crossed her arms and said, "No, Martin. Whatever cooked up theory you have right now, I DON'T want to hear about it."
Martin looked desperately at Clover and Alex. "Clover? Alex? Come on. Convince her I'm not about to spew out some half baked theory. Just hear me out. I really need your help. And Jerry's."
Clover and Alex shrugged their shoulders. When Sam had a firm opinion engrained in her mind, it usually didn't change.
Martin fumed. "Fine. You've left me no choice." He grabbed Sam by the wrist and reached for the compowder that was sticking out of her jean pocket. He opened it and started looking through the numbers under 'J'. "If you won't take me to Jerry, I'll take myself to him."
Martin started scanning the names while Sam was deliberating whether to smack him, or leave everything be so she didn't have to deal with this freak.
"Jenny… Jenima…Jonathan- wait. Why isn't Jerry's number listed in here? Jerry didn't even bother to give you his number?"
Clover chuckled and smirked, "Believe it or not."
Sam turned and grabbed the compowder from Martin's prying hands. "Ughhh. You're driving me nuts! Okay. Clover, Alex, we are taking him to WOOHP. Right now. The sooner he gets out of OUR hair the better."
One step closer to bringing you back Di.
The sound of the sliding doors to Jerry's office brought him alert and he turned in his office chair. "Girls! I didn't expect- oh! Martin! How lovely to see you again! How IS M.O.M?"
Sam said, "He's not here on a courtesy call Jer. Apparently he needs our help."
"With what?"
"Ask him."
The girls took a seat on the oh-so-familiar red couch while Jerry pulled up a seat for Martin.
"Well?" Jerry clasped his hands on the desk.
Martin looked back at the girls for confirmation it would be alright to go ahead and speak. Alex and Clover gave him a supportive thumbs up, while Sam just looked down at her hands.
"It was a few weeks ago. I was supposed to go downtown with my sister Diana to meet our dad."
Sister. I'd remember all those times when we'd call each other step brother and step sister when we were upset or mad with each other because we tried our best in any way possible to acknowledge we weren't actually related. But step- brother/ sister was the farthest we could get. Everyone still knew we were family.
"And I…uh… kinda pulled a stupid move. Diana didn't want to be late so she went to the bus stop instead of waiting for me to drive her. When I drove to the bus stop to catch up with her…it was awful. Police tape…it was everywhere."
All the stares, everyone making a path for me. The light in your emerald eyes fading, your touch on my face. How I wish I could've taken everything back or how I could've told you something more comforting.
On the couch, Alex looked like she was tearing up, Clover started glaring at Sam, and Sam… well…she clenched her fists in a ball and looked at the ground trying to ignore the dagger like stare Clover was giving her.
"My sister's life was taken from me. She was shot and killed by someone who had no regard for another person's life. They caught him but it still doesn't feel like justice to me. I want Diana back."
Alex started bawling a river of tears, went to Jerry's desk, and just about went on her knees crying, "Jerry! Please! You have to do something for Martin! This is just too sad!"
Jerry stood up and put a hand on Martin's shoulder. "I'm sorry Martin. But what can I do? It's not like you can go back in time."
Martin wiped a tear out of his eye and looked up defiantly at Jerry. "I know you can."
Sam and Clover looked at each other. Nobody except the three girls and Jerry knew that Jerry had the equipment to go to the past or future. Did Martin know something?
"I know you have the gear Jerry. I want to go back in time to save my sister."
Alex whispered into Jerry's ear, "How does he know this?"
Jerry looked grim and said, "How do you know we even have the gear?"
Martin's hands clenched in his lap and he said, "That's not important. I want to know if you can help me."
Clover stood up and sighed. "It's no use lying to him Jer. He's from a secret organization too. He might not know everything but he knows some stuff. What about that time machine thingy we got sucked into a few months ago?"
Jerry responded, "I dismantled it right after. I didn't want that happening again on purpose or accidentally." Turning to Martin he said, "I can't do it. I'm sorry."
Martin raised his voice and asked, "Why not? I want my sister back and I don't care if I have to sacrifice my job to do it. I just want her back. Please Jerry."
"You would be messing with the fabric of time, lives would change. Some other person could have been shot on that street. You don't just mess with time as if it's some toy, Martin."
Sam, staying quiet this whole time, stood up and almost yelled out, "Enough already! Just do something Jer. We must have some time machine stuff lying around this place. I'll help if it comes down to it."
All four of the people in front of Sam turned to stare back at her in shocked surprise.
Jerry sighed in exasperation. Three of his best agents were on Martin's side. If he did this for Martin it wouldn't be fair for anyone else though.
"This will be a dangerous mission. It will alter some futures. But if you really want this done, I can help. I'll do this as a favor to MOM's best agent, and there's one thing you four need to do. The time machine can be built in our lab but we need the timepiece. It's the crucial piece to the time machine that will set the date to which you want to go back too."
Alex said determinedly, "Where is it? We'll get it!"
Jerry said, "It's on WOOHP island in the holding facility."
Clover screamed, "WOOHP island? This is a crime against humanity to send us there again. It severely damaged my coif the last time we were there."
Sam put a reassuring hand on Clover's shoulder and whispered, "Please Clover? Do it for Martin and Diana."
"Ugh. Fine. Let's hope this is fast. But I am NOT going into that seriously grody holding facility."
Now it was Sam's turn to glare at Clover. Exasperated, Clover threw her hands in the air and said, "Alright, alright. Give us deets, Jer."
Jerry nodded and produced a map of WOOHP island and the holding facility on the big screen.
"The timepiece is held in the basement of the holding facility. I stored it there so a situation like this would happen. It's the only one left. As you girls know, be careful on the island. Sometimes we have -uh- security breach issues. When you get to the holding facility just present your WOOHP ID badges and ask to go the weapons storage room. If they question you, say it was orders from above."
Clover said, "YAWWWN, Jer. We've been working here how long? We know the drill."
"Yes but this is a bit different. You're asking me to somewhat resurrect the dead."
Sam said, "Alright. Load us up Jer!"
Jerry gave the girls and Martin their gadgets and the keys to the jet.
"Oh Martin," Jerry added. "Take this security badge with you so they know you're with WOOHP."
Martin looked at it and exclaimed, "Is it secretly those ninja throwing stars?"
"No… it's just a security badge."
Martin's face dropped. "I've always wanted to throw one of those things."
Sam muttered out inaudibly, "Just like I remember him from the last mission."
Clover yelled from the jets, "Hey slowpokes! Let's go we have a mission to finish!"
Sam started on her way. Before Martin started on his way towards the jet, he turned to Jerry and said, "Thank you for what you're doing for me… and for Diana. I know she would appreciate this. But probably not more than me."
Jerry put on a hand on Martin's shoulder and said, "You're a good brother to her Martin. Now, hurry along before the girls leave without you."
And for that one moment a spark in Martin's eyes ignited making him feel more determined to get his sister back.
Inside the jet Sam and Alex were fighting over who would be pilot.
"Alex! You can't drive a car what makes you think you can drive a plane?"
"Well you should go sit next to Martin and apologize for what you said earlier today."
Clover fiddled with the controls and said, "I'm with Alex. If you're that worried about her piloting skills, I'll be the pilot on this trip."
Sam fumed. "Fine." And took a seat very grumpily while Martin entered the jet and seated himself next to her.
A few minutes later the jet was flying through the sky.
Sam and Martin awkwardly sat in silence for the next forty-five minutes. Alex looked at Sam signaling to say 'Go apologize.'
Sam sighed and said, "Hey, Martin. How's it been going? I mean despite the circumstances."
Martin turned to face the wall and muttered, "Why do you care?"
"Ugh. I'm just trying to make a conversation okay?"
"Why did you decide to help if you didn't care?"
"Look. I'm sorry about earlier today. I really am. I really should've heard you out. I didn't know. I'm really sorry. I was a jerk, I'll admit. After hearing your story I just felt so guilty. I wish there was more of a way I could make it up to you. Besides. I know how much you really care about her deep down."
Martin's eyebrows shot up and he turned to face Sam. "It's okay-"
"It's not okay," Sam said solemnly.
Martin cheered her up by saying, "You were the one who tipped the balance into Jerry getting us a time machine. That's more than I could've asked for."
Sam smiled.
Clover turned around smiling and said, "It's about time you two made nice. It was getting super awkward with so much silence! Anyways, we're just about to approach WOOHP isla-"
She was cut short when a tremendous force knocked the jet off course and almost tipped it 90 degrees.
Sam unbuckled her seatbelt and ran to the front of the jet. "What WAS that?"
Martin unbuckled his seatbelt as well and asked Alex, "Can you put it on autopilot so we can check this thing out?"
Alex turned around frightened and squealed, "No chance! We don't have time to evacuate and our engines are fried! We're going to make a crash landing!"
Clover attempted to take the controls and pull up but it was no use. "It's no use guys! Brace yourselves!"
Alex and Clover grabbed each other.
Sam, suddenly terrified, turned to Martin and started sobbing. "It can't end like this. I have to make it up to you. I promised to help get your sister back. This can't end now."
Martin placed a hand on both of hers and pulled her down to the floor. He wrapped his other arm around her and pulled her closer to him. Her head rested again his shoulder and her body was wracking with sobs.
She really does care. A lot.
"It'll be okay Sam. We'll make it out okay."
Hope you all enjoyed :)
