Shot Never Fired
"Heero?"
"Hmm?"
"You still gonna kill me?"
Silence. She should have expected as much. The question used to be answerable with a 'yeah,' or a threat, or something similar. But Heero Yuy had no threats left for the Sank kingdom princess. The threats had long since been replaced by promises.
"Well?"
Heero, half asleep in the shade of a large tree on a very warm summer day, mumbled, "When was I gonna kill you?"
"On the day of my birthday party, for example," Relena prompted.
Heero yawned. "Oh, yeah, then. Duo got in the way."
"What about when there was a party at our school?"
Heero shrugged. "Too many people."
"Well, what about after that?"
"Didn't want to."
"Heero?" Relena asked timidly, "why are you here?"
"Relena, you know I'm not a religious person, don't ask theological stuff."
She chuckled at that. "No, I mean, here, under the tree," she said, stopping herself before asking with me.
"It's hot and Duo broke the air conditioner, so the shade is better in than inside."
"How'd Duo brake the air conditioner?" Relena asked.
Staring her straight in the eye, Heero told her "You don't want to know."
"Heero?"
"What now?" he asked, irritated. Everything she said that day had been a question.
"Why don't you kill me?"
Heero rolled his eyes and opened his mouth to say something, but changed his mind. Instead, he stuck his first finger out and shaped his hand like a 'gun.' Pressing his index finger to Relena's temple, he said "Bang, you're dead."
Relena mock-moaned in agony and slumped over. She lost her balanced due to her new position and fell off the low branch she had been sitting on, just above Heero and fell on him. Snickering, Heero wrapped one arm around Relena and held her to him. She opened her mouth to speak, but Heero interjected. "Corpses are quiet." Relena wiggled in protest in Heero's hold. "And they can't move."
After a few moments, Heero spoke again.
"I won't ever hurt you, you know that don't you?"
Relena heart felt like it stopped beating. "What if you have hurt me?" she asked softly.
"Tell me, and I'll stop."
Relena pulled herself out of Heero's embrace and knelt at arms length away from him. "Running away when I only wanted to make sure you were all right hurt, ripping up the party invitation hurt, threatening to kill me hurt, pushing me away from you hurts."
Heero was silent and then said "I had a mission."
"And now?" Relena asked, her voice icy.
"I have you." As he spoke, Heero lurched forward, grabbed Relena around the waist and pulled her back to him. "Does this hurt?" he asked his voice a whisper as he softly kissed her.
In reply, she whispered back, "No."
