Beginning
Link comes to him before the hop and mentions, very casually, that there's this girl who might be good enough to replace Brenda.
"I saw her dancing yesterday," he says. "she's good. You oughtta keep an eye out for her."
Corny says he will. "What's her name?"
"I… don't know. But you can't miss her."
When the girl appears halfway through the hop, Corny sees what he means. Link tries to introduce them. "I didn't catch your name, darlin'."
"I'm Tracy. Turnblad."
"Tracy," repeats Link, smiling. "Good to meet you. This is Mister Corny Collins."
He thinks nothing of it.
Middle
Tracy is a delight – new, different, and pro-integration. That she's the happiest gal he's ever met doesn't hurt, either.
Amber's furious. Corny wouldn't be much of a host if he didn't have a good idea of how well his dancers got along together, and tension went up like a rocket from the day Tracy joined. Some love her, some hate her, and watching the kids dance, Corny has a pretty good idea of who's who this time around.
When Link whirls away from Amber to join Tracy at the pageant, Corny just grins and keeps on clapping.
He isn't surprised.
End
There are good things about hosting a teenage dance show, but a down side is that every few years, you'll lose all your best dancers anyway.
Link and Tracy are about to turn twenty. They've finished school. Seaweed's leaving too, and half his best council members. Only Big Li'l Inez remains to rock the town.
Excited, his star couple tell him they have big plans with the talent agency in Chicago, and thank him for his glowing recommendations as they say goodbye. He swears he sees a ring box hidden in Link's pocket.
He wishes them the best of luck.
