~Ten Years~
Kukai stuffed the small box in his pocket and shifted it around so it wouldn't be too noticeable. He'd have to have it that way if everything was going to go as planned. This was important. It was ten years.
He knew he had to be one of the luckiest guys in the world. And not just because he thought he had the best girlfriend the world could possibly offer him. Most couples didn't stay together that long. Most singers or actors or famous people didn't stay married that long. Plenty of civilians didn't stay married that long.
She had wanted to marry him sooner. But he told her that he needed to finish school; get a career; make something of his life before he could marry her. She may be rich, but he didn't want to live off her wealth. He planned to work and be able to help support her first. He didn't necessarily have to support her. He wanted to support her.
So she waited for him. He was the only person she would ever wait for. Most girls wouldn't have waited; they would have just moved on by now. Another reason he was lucky.
He was ready now, he thought. He didn't just think- he knew. He had kept her waiting for long enough, hadn't he?
When he saw her, he took her for a walk. To the place where they had met-that seemed like the right place to do it.
She held his hand tightly. After ten years, it still made her happy, just to hold onto him.
When they arrived at their destination, Kukai took in the scene. The bright skies, the crystal water in the river, the greenest grass he had seen in ages.
She was taking it all in too, when her boyfriend dropped down on one knee.
"What's going on, Kukai?" she asked, bewildered by his actions. He simply smirked and took the box out of his pocket. "W-what's that?"
He popped open the box and then popped a question.
"Utau, will you marry me?" Utau stood there in shock. There was her boyfriend down on one knee proposing to her. She had waited for this moment for ages.
How long had she been waiting? That part was a blur. But why had he picked today? It was very special, she knew, but her mind was in too much shock to realize what day it was.
How long had they been together? She counted out the time in her mind. That's right, it was ten years. Ten years today.
Utau threw her arms around her beloved and said,
"Yes! Yes! Yes a thousand times!" She hugged him tightly. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and smiled. He couldn't be happier. Neither could she.
After all, it had been ten years.
