A/N: Oh look an extended ending. I kid, except not really. People were disappointed with the ending, an ending that I left purposely vague for a reason to make it easier for me to do this story which really was going to be a much longer story, after I finished Tenth street red (shameless plug), and to make headway on an original piece that I was about to undertake (it's a massive project which is still in the research phase). I knew the ending wouldn't be liked and I knew that some people would feel cheated, but as I stated before. I felt that Liara was canon LI that doesn't mean I picked up the romance option and force-fed it back to you. I just basically stated that Shepard got Liara pregnant which in any story that I would tell if Shepard embraced eternity with Liara on Earth when she has something to show you, that it would ultimately result in little blue children. It doesn't matter if she was in a continued relationship with someone else, it would always result in blue children. Whether or not Liara purposely did this with the intention of having Shepard's baby, is another thing entirely. I would like to think it was an accident. So that's what we're going with.
Jade Shepard was not having a good day. One could argue that waking up from a medically induced coma while being surrounded by family and friends was a good day. But they were hiding something from her, she could tell they were all hiding something from her. If they had brought her back to deal with some galaxy ending terror she was planned to space herself the moment she got the option, or all of them. She had asked of course, what they were hiding but they had all brushed it aside, muttering something about her needing to rest. She had been in a coma for two years, she was done being on bed rest. "Garrus as my best friend—"
"Which is unfortunate given the fact that you always get me into some sort of impossible situation," Garrus cut off.
Jade shot him a withering glare that had him look away, his mandibles twitching in amusement. "You will tell me what everyone is hiding from me."
"You just woke up from a coma, and it's been two years again. You have a lot of information to take in and a lot of people are just happy to see you alive. Which is why we only have about ten minutes each with you. Your parents are up next by the way, I think. Who haven't you seen?"
"I saw Miranda when I woke up the first time, it's fuzzy, not sure if that was a dream or not. Tali's been in to see me, Grunt and Wrex. Grunt tried to headbutt me, Wrex mentioned that he has spawn that he named after me. Samara has been into see me, she's glad I'm alive. Ash dropped by earlier. Joker, is upset about that I couldn't save EDI. Jack's been in here. Hackett mentioned something about ceremonies and how he was glad that I'm still kicking."
"So no Liara?" Garrus asked.
"I assume she's alive and doing shadow broker stuff," Jade said with a shrug wincing in pain after she did. "She wasn't there the last time I woke up. I believe she had some revenge to take care of then, I don't expect to see her until I go looking for her."
"You two broke up again?"
"We didn't get back together in the first place, there hasn't been anyone since Miranda and I went our separate ways. I talked about this with her, she knows that there is nothing between us."
Garrus blinked twice, this was news to him. "Well you were getting close on the ship—"
"Has she said something?" Jade asked her voice firm, and Garrus winced. It was her Commander voice.
"No actually Liara hasn't said a word, I just thought you two were together, and I haven't seen Liara today."
He was lying to her, he was a terrible liar and he was lying to her. If only she could get out of this stupid hospital bed. She'd figure out for herself what they were hiding from her. She was much too tired to trick the information out of him.
"We'll talk later Shepard," Garrus said standing up quickly as if knowing exactly where this conversation was going to go. He certainly didn't want to be the one to tell her. "I'll get your parents and anyone else who wants to see you."
"Miranda."
Garrus stopped and looked at her, "Excuse me?"
Jade studied Garrus for a long moment, he was tense and if he could sweat she knew he would be doing so right now. If she pressed him she was sure he would crack, "Miranda is who I want to see. If you think that I was with Liara it probably means that she does as well. I've given her like three years, two of which I'm sure she believed that I was with Liara. I don't want to see Liara before I see Miranda, she could have mentioned that we weren't together, she hasn't. Drag her in here if you must after my parents, it's been three years nearly four. Tell her she doesn't have a choice, or I'll get out of this hospital bed and find her."
It wasn't an idle threat, the very first thing that Shepard had tried to do when she woke up was swing her legs over the side of the bed and walk out of the hospital. It had taken Wrex holding her down to stop her. "I'll find her, you stay. I'll make sure she sees you after your parents, they arrived several minutes ago. Your mother she's an admiral now."
Jade grunted in response, not looking forward to meeting her parents. "Oh good I'm glad to see my heroics have helped bolster her career again," she snipped.
Garrus laughed nervously as he rushed out of the hospital room, he had thought it odd that Liara had declined to be the first one to visit Jade. Liara had explained it easily saying that announcing that Shepard had a kid might have been to overwhelming or the first day, he certainly wasn't going to be there when Shepard found out, even if he was curious to see how Shepard would react to the news. He looked at Shepard's parents, "She wants to see you now, and she knows we're hiding something so you know best not to blurt it out."
Garrus watched as Kane Shepard jumped to his feet and offered his wife his arm before dragging her to see their only child. He watched them leave before he turned on Liara, who flinched under his gaze. "You know," the statement was simple, and Garrus nodded. "This wasn't supposed to happen, I didn't intentionally—I mean a part of me wanted to—but it wasn't intentional, I simply went to deep with her."
"You didn't think this would have been wise to mention this to somebody, Miranda, perhaps after Benezia was born. The news destroyed her, she thought that you and Shepard resumed your relationship, I thought you and Shepard relationship. Everyone did."
"Miranda didn't ask, no one asked. Everyone just made the assumption that we were together. If we hadn't been stuck on that planet for a year no one would have even known about Benezia. I didn't think—I thought she was dead. We all thought she was dead."
Garrus nodded, for the longest time it had looked as if Shepard wouldn't pull through. "Shepard's going to be furious, perhaps it's time I see what this hospital has in terms of food. Just remember the best advice when it comes to Shepard…just duck," Garrus patted Liara's shoulder absentmindedly. "Talk to Miranda," he called over his shoulder.
Jade stared at the small black box her father had slipped into her hand, before he patted it. "What is this?"
Kane Shepard grinned, "It's the ring that I proposed to your mother with, we didn't have that much money back then and it was all I could afford at the time but she loved it and she said yes. When the time is right you'll know what to do with it," he nodded sagely.
"I—I haven't even seen Miranda let alone had a conversation with her. We are nowhere ready to take this step. I mean I doubt she even knows how I feel about her."
Hannah Shepard stared at her daughter, she had been smiling the entire time an action which had bothered Jade to no end. The only time her mother had that look on her face was when she would talk about family and mention grandchildren. "Miranda? We were talking about Liara."
"Liara why is everyone mentioning her to me?"
Hannah Shepard exchanged looks with her husband before taking her daughters hand. "Well Jade when you were a child we never imagined that we would be in this situation. Your father merely thought that he had to keep the boys away, we never thought we'd actually be talking to you about taking responsibility."
"Responsibility for what? I haven't dated anyone since Miranda. I haven't been with Liara in—" Jade suddenly stopped as it finally clicked in her head, the memories snapping back to her.
"Oh look the penny dropped," Kane Shepard said absentmindedly watching his daughter sputter for a moment. He patted her arm, "You know the benefit is that now we can leave you alone about grandchildren. Though with how your mother is with Benezia she'll probably be on your case in a few years."
Hannah Shepard frowned at her daughter, "I didn't imagine that it was planned, Liara is very young for an Asari."
"I wasn't in a relationship with her, she told me she had something to show me. I didn't think—"
"You know that's how you were conceived," Kane interrupted with a shrug. "Your mother had something—"
Jade's eyes flashed back to reality and she recoiled, "No. Don't finish that. Does everyone think that there was something between me and Liara?" She was met with a brief nod of affirmation from her mother. "I'm going to kill her, I told her how I felt about Miranda, I told her I wanted to be with her and she screws me over. How could I have been so stupid?"
"Table it," Hannah Shepard said, her voice becoming authoritative, causing the younger Shepard to look over at her mother, snapping to attention as best she could in a hospital bed with various monitoring devices attached to her. "You have a kid, it was accidental. Shit happens what's more important is dealing with it."
Jade rolled her eyes as she yanked off the IV that was in her hand and began to pull off the monitoring devices. "I didn't want to have a kid, I never gave it much thought."
"You should probably stay in—"
"Yes well next time don't embrace eternity with an Asari, it's like having unprotected sex. It happened Liara got pregnant you have a daughter who is healthy, and is adorable and is dying to meet her father. You will fall in love with her. We did the moment we saw her."
Jade swung a leg onto the ground testing the tension in her legs as if to make sure she wasn't going to face plant on the ground. The room spun but she ignored it pulling herself to her feet. She had been in this position before and she had proceeded to take down a Cerberus facility. She could do this. "I need to find Miranda."
"What you will do is lay back down," Miranda's voice cut through the air stopping Jade from moving for a moment as she walked to her side and placed a firm hand on her shoulder and pushed her back into bed. "Another two years to put you back together again, you can't keep—"
"I love you. Marry me," Jade held the black box out for Miranda.
Miranda stared at her, Jade had effectively silenced her.
Kane Shepard snorted, "When I said right time this was not what I was talking about."
Jade gave her father a dirty look before turning her attention back to Miranda. "Look, it's complicated. Things between us will never be easy especially now since I somehow managed to father a kid, with an ex. But that's what Liara is she's an ex-love. I chose you, I came back to you. The damn hero in me didn't want to leave you, without letting you know how I felt. And I know that we have a lot of shit to work through, the fact that I got Liara pregnant. The fact that you left the first time, what happened to you. How you feel about me. We need to talk about it, and we will."
Miranda kept staring at the simple silver band.
"I know we can't get married tomorrow, but don't say no. Just take the ring and look at it as a promise. That I Jade Shepard with my various and annoying epithets want you, and as long as you wear that ring I will wait until you're ready. So for once in your life don't say no, don't run away. Just say yes or you know don't and just put the ring on. "
Miranda took the box from Shepard's hands which were unnaturally shaky. "Are you going to stop trying to be everyone's knight in shining armor?"
"I'm done trying to save everyone. Someone else can save the galaxy, all I want is you. This is what I sacrificed for, I just wanted you."
"I can't promise you what you want. That we'll work it out."
"I know. But keep it, ignore the horrified look on my parent's face right now and keep the ring. Wear it, don't wear it but keep it and know that I chose you. I will always choose you," Jade smiled and took Miranda's hand and brought it to her cracked lips kissing it gently.
Miranda said nothing, it had been two long years she had gotten the help that she needed, she had gotten to the point where she thought she was ready and pulled the ring out of the box and slid her finger into it, quirking an eyebrow at Shepard. "You really should meet your daughter, she's been bouncing off the walls. She's your biggest fan you know."
Jade smile faded a bit at the mention of her daughter and adjusted in the bed. "How old?"
"She just turned one. She is the most protected person in the galaxy, and probably has the scariest extended family in the galaxy." Liara said entering the room. She had been at the doorway listening in, if she had been crying it certainly didn't look it, as she held a squirming bundle in her arms. "Shepard meet Benezia."
Jade said nothing and held her arms out taking the squirming child from her. "Hey there," she said looking down at the baby who calmed at her voice and reached up and tapped her cheek, giggling loudly. Whatever annoyance she felt towards Liara faded and she smiled as the small Asari gurgled up at her. Perhaps the price she had paid throughout the years had been more than worth it.
So here's the thing this is it. That's the end. I was going to make the above into a multi-chap fic, I can't be bothered anymore. This was supposed to at least be a 3-5 chapter story. It's a nice happy ending with all the bows tied up nice and pretty. Enjoy.
