Reasons for Betrayal
God how it hurts. It hurts so much. Every day I have to look into his face and lie. I have to pretend to be my charming mother's perfect son, when all I really want to do is scream and throw it all back into her contemptible face. Of course it's all just an act: I know, she knows, he doesn't.
Sirius was my brother and my best friend. We had an unbreakable trust in each other. When he started school he began to rebel against our family's ways. Of course mother thought a good dose of pain could beat it out of him. The Crutiatus Curse. It was never too long, not too frequent, but it was happening and it had an effect, just not the one she wanted. He became pale and drawn and frightened. He never told anyone at school. What could they do anyway? I was his sole comforter.
But I was a coward.
All throughout our childhood I never stood up for what was right. I was disgusted with myself but still…I did nothing.
It was his seventh year at school when I finally acted. During the summer holidays before he returned to Hogwarts for a final time. We received a letter from the Dark Lord. He wanted Black allegiance. He wanted a Death Eater. Of course they chose Sirius; he was the oldest, the cleverest, and the strongest. If anyone could rid him of his rebellious streak it was Voldemort. I knew what this meant.
Torture.
I convinced mother to send me for the Marking instead. I was to become one of them. The day my life changed was the day I lost my brother also. I was wearing a short sleeved shirt and everyone could see the ugly tattoo burned into my arm. He'd stared at it disgustedly then torn his gaze away from it to meet my eyes.
"Why?"
I couldn't tell him my true intentions, it would be too dangerous. I walked away instead.
When I found out about the horcruxes I discovered I wasn't a coward. I was determined. This…this…inhumane monstrosity had to be stopped. It was my responsibility, my duty.
Kreacher and I worked tirelessly until finally the time came. We travelled across the emerald lake and I drank that accursed potion. I saw so many terrible things, begging for death. I was too weak to make it off the island so I ordered my faithful servant to switch the lockets then to save himself and leave me.
I pulled myself out of these morbid memories, raising a clammy hand to wipe tears out of my dimming eyes. These would be my last thoughts.
"For you Sirius." I whispered then cold marble hands dragged me into the icy depths and death claimed me.
