Open Wounds

-x-x-x-

Kagome had pulled a one-eighty in mood. Matt was finding it difficult to keep up with her temperament, while Mello had chosen to keep silent and watch her attentively. Her fingers held a metal Mayo Hager Needle Holder as she lithely pulled at the needle, the thin Tissue Forceps were held in her other hand as she stitched the wound on Mello's arm. A pair of glasses were worn, and she had her tongue sticking out from between her lips as she eyed her work critically and concentrated fully on the task at hand.

"Hey, Kagome?"

She nodded her head in acknowledgement to her name but said nothing to Matt who was watching from next to Mello.

"Why do you have Medical Sutures in your wallet?" He eyed the wallet in which she'd pulled the thin sutures kit from. This might not have been so strange to see in Mello's wallet, but he hadn't expected Kagome to have one.

"You forget who my boyfriend was already? This isn't my first time dealing with wounds like this. It won't be my last, I'm sure. Mello's got a couple small incisions, I'm sure Naraku would be pleased to know that he left a few scars on the Tigers boss."

"Tch, he went at me with a fucking scalpel."

She smirked, "I know. I can tell based on how deep the incision is, and how clean the cut was. It's nothing you will need to worry over though. All cosmetic, really."

"So you say," he sighed and leaned back comfortably on the couch as he let her focus. "How long have you been a member of the Spiders?"

She frowned, "please don't misunderstand, I was never a member of the Spiders. I just hung out with them. I was friends with Naraku and his crew, but they...they were pretty protective of me. They refused to let me join in any official manner. I wasn't allowed a gun; I wasn't allowed to carry their ink or have my own motorcycle that was marked by their insignia. I was only along for the ride." She clipped the suture with her small scissors after tying a tight not in the suture thread. Grabbing the bottle of Vodka, she'd stolen from the top of the fridge in the kitchen, she poured a little over the next wound and listened to the sharp hiss and intake of breath before placing it back down on the table. The towel in her hand caught the liquid so that it didn't touch the couch or floor. "Naraku...had told Bankotsu to take me home that day that you and he were going to have a shootout." Tears swirled heavily in her eyes and she stopped herself from piercing in skin. Not wanting to make a mistake, she sighed and cleared her throat. "I told him to stay and left on my own...I should have let him take me home."

"Kagome,"

"You can't let that shit get to you," Mello scoffed, his eyes were shut as he listened to her. "Too many people that you and care for are going to die, and you won't be able to control it. I learned that a long time ago and blaming yourself for every single one of their deaths is just going to break you down."

"..." she looked up at him as she tugged the needle through the flesh, "you must have a ton of experience,"

Matt sighed, "you two choose the shittiest of topics." Standing up, he walked towards the window and opened it, the rain had stopped a while back, but the chill was still heavily hanging in the air. He took the carton of cigarettes on the bookshelf next to the window, shaking it as he knocked it into his palm before popping one out.

Her eyes vaguely followed his motions with her peripheral vision as she let her eyes follow the thread. "This is the last one?"

"Mm, yeah."

She nodded, "ah, I actually ran into officer Matsuda at the club, we were drinking at the Bar for a bit."

"Officer Matsuda? Our Information Technology professor's husband?" Matt frowned as he exhaled the soft grey smoke from between his lips, the wind carrying it off a distance.

"Yeah, he was in a worse state than I was."

"Worse?" Matt chuckled, "I will admit that you sober up pretty damn quickly, but you were also pretty drunk. How was he?"

"Hm, if I was at the "Best Friend Stage" of drunk, the Officer was at the "Journey Home" stage. Too drunk to know who's house he was going to."

"What's the best friend stage?" Mello frowned, "like, everyone in the bar is your best friend?"

"Yep," she smiled, "I try not to go further than that stage..."

He sighed, "I don't get drunk,"

Matt nodded, "he doesn't." He stubbed the cigarette out and tossed it aside before closing the window and walking back across from Kagome as she finished tying up the last of Mello's stitches. "Talented fingers,"

She raised a brow and chuckled, "aren't they though?"

He blushed and turned his eyes away as he crossed his arms back behind his head. "so, what did you and the drunkard officer talk about?"

"Satan's last name."

Mello's eyes snapped open at that, "Satan doesn't have a last name."

"I said the same thing, he asked me if I prayed and I told him "no"." She smiled and snipped the suture thread. "He told me not to start."

Mello flexed his arm and took the towel beside him before whipping off excess vodka and blood. "Why?"

"Because God's given up on humanity." She stood with her tools and walked to the kitchen where she placed the tools in a bowl of vodka that she'd poured earlier. Turning back, she started towards her bedroom door. "He explained how Naraku had been apprehended after trying to attack someone who was directly responsible for Bankotsu's death. After he was apprehended, a few hours passed, they found his cell empty. No one knows how he escaped, but he's no longer in police custody."

"He's a sharp fucker, the guy no doubt is in hiding until he finds what he's looking for. However, I guarantee he's not looking for anyone in my crew."

She stalled her hand on her door, glancing curiously back at Mello, Matt watched her curiously as she took what he said at face value. "You are sure?"

"I'm positive. He's intelligent, he knows that there was foul play that day. I told you before that I don't miss when I fire, I thought you were dead honestly. When I kill someone, I don't fucking deny it. I won't make excuses or blame someone else. However, I won't take the credit for a life I had no hand in taking. I have no reason to lie to you,"

She nodded, "then I will trust you. Goodnight, both of you."

Matt sighed, watching the door shut as his roommate finally turned in for the night. He took the Vodka on the table, twisting the cap back on before placing it back atop the fridge. A soft melody slipped past from beneath Kagome's door.

Could have been my happy ever after
living like we're in a fairytale.

"So, who was it?"

"That's a good question," Mello leaned forward as he pulled his shirt back on. Having removed it for the girl who had demanded it off in order to clean up his wounds.

"You don't have any ideas?"

Intoxicated by your reputation
I can see the mischief in your eyes
Trusted you despite my reservations
Now I'm alone

Piercing blue eyes took in the door where the music was coming from. He wasn't opposed to the music, he actually found it kind of soothing with the soft piano plucking, but then...the woe-is-me lyrics were a bit much for him. "Think about who has it out for both Tigers and Spiders...there's a number of crews that would benefit from both Hitomi and I offing one another. However, none of them are intelligent enough to pull something like that off without being noticed. That means,"

"Someone new?"

I let you in
When I should have run
Now all that's left
Is something numb

Silently standing, Mello walked over to the window and glanced outside, "someone new, or someone on the inside."

"A traitor?! Wait, in Spiders or Tigers?"7

"Who knows, but I'll figure it out. It's only a matter of time before this person slips up. If it's Spiders, they'll most likely come seeking out Kagome sooner or later. If it's Tigers, they'll come seeking me out."

So alone
So alone
So alone
So alone

Matt walked over to his friend, placing a hand on his shoulder, he watched as expressive and deadly intense blue eyes caught his emerald green. "I don't want Kagome to be hurt any more than she already has been."

A curious brow became well defined in an arch as Mello smirked at his best friend and the genius hacker of the Tigers. "Are you asking me, or telling me?"

"...I'm not the type to make demands, Mel. I'm asking you, please, protect her."

"Tch," Mello knocked Matt's hand from his shoulder, "don't get so serious Matt, I don't like it." He tilted his head a bit and frowned as he made his way to the table and picked up his cellphone. The screen was lit up from receiving a text. Swiping up, he keyed in a six-digit number and watched the message appear on his screen, "...fucking hell, Near." He rolled his eyes and turned to see a confused Matt looking over his shoulder at the message, "go get him before he bleeds out to death."

Matt nodded, grabbing his shoes and pulling them on as he left the dorm room and made his way to another room.

Mello tossed the phone into the couch before turning to the door where his nursemaid had only just gone to sleep. He could still hear music wafting softly from beneath the door, but the soft cords had surely knocked her out with the accompaniment of alcohol and sleep deprivation backing it up. Contemplating whether he should wake her up or not, he looked back at the phone he'd thrown against the couch. He could almost hear his seconds voice in his head. The irritation he felt thinking about it was enough to numb his mind.

I know it's late, however, considering the situation, I figured you would be more upset if I waited to inform you of my departure from the Hospital. On my way back to my dormitory, I must have torn my stitches, as...there is a surplus of blood on my clothes now. I should be fine for the night if I wrap it, but if you could come by tomorrow and help me sterilize the wound, that would be greatly appreciated. – N

"...fuck." He sighed and walked to the door, knocking softly, he opened the door carefully and found the girl curled into a pillow as she hugged it tightly in her sleep.

You wouldn't have these wings
if you weren't meant to fly

He cast his eyes over the cd player next to her.

They tell you to believe
what they believe is right
will you choose flight...or fight...

Closing his eyes, he stepped up to her bedside and clicked the cd player off before giving the girl a gentle shake.

"Mm? What? What is it?" She looked up at him and sat up. Her eyes blinking in exhaustion.

"We've got a slight problem. Matt went to pick up one of my boys. He left the Hospital before he was released, the idiot tore his stitches getting back to his dorm."

Eyes widening, she kicked her sheets and blanket off her and threw her legs from the bed. "Is he already here?"

"Not yet," he watched her pull on a pair of khaki shorts under the baggy flannel plaid button up she'd been wearing. Se passed him and opened the drawer under her desk.

"You used up the sutures thread in my travel kit,"

"You have no more?"

She gave him a look, as if asking him if he was seriously asking her that. "Of course, I do. I told you, I took care of Bankotsu, but I took care of everyone else too. Yura...Naraku...Kagura...all of them have been treated by me before."

"Were you going to school to be a doctor?"

Kagome frowned, "no, I learned for them. I wanted to be useful. I somehow ended up taking online courses for Health and Medicine. Many of them...my mom was excited because she thought I was going to school to be a doctor or something akin. Then I through Whammy Tech at her, pulling it out of the woodwork, seemingly."

"Seemingly? What had you transitioning between Medicine to Technology?"

"Nothing, I've always been good with technology. Medicine is just a hobby..." she pulled a new roll of suture thread from her desk, "I'm not a gaming nerd like Matt, but I do enjoy hacking and coding, I find it relaxing. Oh...but you won't find me using 1337-speak."

"The fact that you know what that is makes me want to hug you,"

The two turned to see Matt standing in her doorway with blood covering the length of the left side of his shirt.

He grinned, "I found a lost little sheep hurt and in pain, can we keep him?"

"Not if he's bleeding on the couch!" Kagome frowned, moving past Matt who sighed and followed her back to Near who was taking rapid, shallow breaths. "Oh, damn..." she leaned forward and placed a hand on his cheek, "he's cold and clammy, pale as a ghost...and looks extremely weak...how much blood did he loose?!"

Mello laughed, "he's always been that pale, and he's naturally frail and weak. So, don't worry so much about that. Just sew him up and he'll be fine. He's not in danger of Hypovolemic Shock, so don't put too much emphasis on his physical state of being."

"..." she glared at Mello before she returned back to what she'd been doing earlier, stitching. "I'm going to have to clean his wound first, and I need to remove the current stitches...looks like he's pulled at them a bit, I can't see clearly though until I clean away the blood." She grabbed the vodka once more, this time, she pulled a shot glass down and returned to the table. Pouring a shot, she downed it quickly before she went to work pouring the liquid courage over the boys wound, the towel in Matt's hand was pressed beside the bleeding wound as she cleaned it. "Alright, not too bad at all. I was worried because of the blood soaking his shirt." She eyed the blood-soaked pajama top. The once white fabric was drenched, and the blood had bled freely into the silken fabric.

"Matt, do you own a white button up?"

"I'm sure Near has another at his dorm,"

"Go get one,"

"What!? No way! I already left once tonight; he'll be fine wearing a normal t-shirt tonight!"

Kagome frowned, "Will the two of you shut up!" She glared at the two boys before continuing with the task at hand. "He's asleep already, so he won't be mindful of the clothes he's wearing. Why did he leave the Hospital?"

"I imagine he was worry about Hitomi. He was next door to him, remember? I mentioned that to you earlier."

She nodded, "keep in mind, I'm tired."

Matt smiled, "yeah, and we still need to work on that case, good thing tomorrow is Saturday. So, you can sleep in tomorrow and when you wake up, we will get to work on solving it."

She sighed, "I had planned on visiting the Hospital, Kagura, Jakotsu and Yura are still there, even if Naraku isn't. I also promised my Aunt that I would stop by and visit her every weekend on Saturday."

"Eh!? Well, I guess we can work on the assignment when you get back."

She looked over her work and tightened the not on the sutures thread before snipping it and wiping clean the remaining blood. She smiled and nodded to herself, "don't worry about it, Matt. I will call her tomorrow instead. As for Yura, Jakotsu and Kagura...even if they are still at the hospital, I probably won't be able to visit them right now. With the escape of Naraku, I'm sure security will be tight on their rooms right now, it'll be best if I distract myself while things calm down. So," she turned to Matt, "let's work hard together."

He coughed into his fist and looked away, "yeah, naturally. I'm second in the school, so I don't exactly do things half-assed. However, neither of us will be doing much of anything if we don't get to sleep. It's nearly five in the morning now."

She sighed at that. "Right," she looked at Mello who was leaning against the wall and had been watching her carefully as she worked on his crew mate. "You mentioned a white button up? I have one if you would like to borrow it."

"You don't mind?" He asked curiously. He was wracking his brain as he tried to understand why she was so willing to help them. True, he'd woken her up to sew the albino up, but it was because she'd done so to him already. He knew she'd help the younger boy too. He just didn't understand why. He caught the white shirt when she tossed it at him. The subtle scent of vanilla and frankincense wafted around him as he held it in hand. Eyeing it, he noted the spider on the cuff of the sleeve. "This was Bankotsu's?"

"Yep,"

"..."

"..." she waited to see if he had a problem with the shirt and smirked when he clenched his fist tightly before tossing it to Matt who smiled at Mello before removing Near's shirt and pulling the new one on. He buttoned it before laying him back down on the couch.

Kagome eyed the boy for a few seconds before turning her eyes to meet Matt's, "bring him into my room,"

"...what?"

"Just do it," she said as she entered and fixed her bed back up, pulling the corner of her sheets and comforter back. She nodded to her bed as Matt stared uncertainly at her before placing Near down in her bed carefully. He seemed to have something of a complaint on the tip of his tongue, but he was biting said tongue and keeping his opinion to himself while she covered the Albino of their crew up.

She walked to her closet and pulled a spare pillow and blanket out before she passed by both Matt and Mello. "Both of you, go to sleep." The lights were turned off in the living room as she said this, turning in, she passed out almost as soon as her head hit the pillow. She didn't mind the couch, in fact, she'd already fallen asleep on said couch twice now, what was one more time?

Soft footfalls sounded in the living room as Matt once again put away the vodka. The shot glass was washed and flipped over on the sink to dry. Eyes taking in the tools on the table, he picked them up and dropped them back into the bowl of vodka. Eyes trailing over the sleeping form of Kagome, the blanket that lay half on and half off her. He fixed the blanket carefully, watching her for a few silent moments before he smirked and left back to his room. Mello already lay in his bed. Falling back onto the mattress, he curled up against the blonde and wasn't disappointed when his friend brought his hand to hi hair and soothingly ran it through his reddish auburn locks. Sleep came easily, leaving only the blonde leader awake before he too finally succumbed to sleep nearly thirty minutes later.
