A/N: I watched "Ghost Rider" recently and this little idea wouldn't leave me alone. Just a little something about their reactions to Stephen's comment. Hope you enjoy :)

What If?
"Now if it were you or Jackie...that would be a different story"
Stephen's words rolled around Michael's mind and he took a brief moment to consider what it would be like if it really were Jackie on the table.
He thought of all the times he'd almost lost her in the past and shivered.
It scared him how easily he could lose her.
He looked up and saw her watching him with a quizzical expression on her face; he gave her a half hearted smile, pushing his dark thoughts aside in order to concentrate on the case.
But later that night thoughts of Jackie lying cold and motionless on Stephen's table would haunt him.
He didn't sleep a wink.
...
"Now if it were you or Jackie...that would be a different story"
At Stephen's words Jackie gave an imperceptible shudder.
She didn't even want to think about it, didn't even want to entertain the possibility that one day Michael could be lying on the table.
That she could lose him.
He was her best friend and if she ever lost him...as melodramatic as it sounded, even to her own ears, she was pretty sure that her world would fall apart.
She glanced across at him and noticed that he was lost in his own thoughts, she wondered whether he was thinking the same thing: the same 'what if?'
At the lab she was able to shake those thoughts off, but later that night images of Michael lying on Stephen's table would haunt her dreams.
She barely slept at all.
