This story takes place one month after the episode, 'The Volunteer', in which D.J. became friends with a senior citizen with dementia named Eddie. One point Eddie made was that D.J. looked like his daughter, Gloria, and even mistook her for Gloria while he was experiencing a lapse in memory.

Donna walked to the retirement home, as she had every Thursday since she began the Adopt a Grandparent Program. The cool wind blew on that Autumn day, gently blowing D.J.'s blond hair. The teenage girl walked up the small flight of stairs, and opened the door.
Several elderly men and women were watching t.v., playing checkers, playing shuffle board in the back, or just sitting around and talking. The girl scanned the room, but couldn't find Eddie.
"Um, excuse me," Donna asked the woman at the front desk. "Is Eddie here right now?"
"I think he's still in his room," replied the African American woman. "He hasn't been coming out much lately, D.J. We're starting to worry about him."
D.J. began to feel a lump form in her throat. Her father had told her Eddie would be get worse, and she had begun to notice in the past couple of weeks. "Uh, can I still see him?" D.J. asked.
"Are you sure you want to? Eddie'll understand if...," The woman replied.
"I'm sure," D.J. interrupted, nervously. "A visit'll probably do him good."
"Alright," said the woman. "You know the room?"
"Room 107," answered Donna. "Thank you." The teenager then walked around the corner, and began reading the numbers engraved on the doors. Finally, she came to Eddie's.
"Eddie," the girl called, tapping on the closed door. "Eddie, it's D.J. Are you there."
"Come in," called Eddie.
D.J's heart lightened, and a smile dawned on her face as she turned the door knob. Inside, Eddie was sitting on a chair, watching Andy Griffith.
The senior lifted himself out of the green, plaid chair, and walked over to D.J. "Hi, Gloria," he greeted, his voice drenched in happiness as he hugged the teenager.
"Hi, Daddy," Donna greeted back. The teen had grown used to this: some times, she was D.J., others she was Gloria. "How have you been?"
"Just fine now that you're here," he said. "I've missed you."
"I missed you too," replied Donna. "Sorry it's been so long."
"Me too," replied Eddie. "But you have school, and I have to work. But hey, we're together now."
D.J. felt the lump return to her throat. It hurt so much to know Eddie still believed Gloria was a teenager who lived at home with him. What was she supposed to do? Did she tell him the truth and shatter his life, or keep living the lie, having to leave Eddie with the excuse 'I'm going to bed, Dad' or 'I have to run some errands, Dad'. The worst part was hearing Eddie say, "I love you, Gloria. See you in the morning." or "Be back soon, sweetie." when, in fact, she wouldn't be back for another week. Donna would love to come in every day, and be the daughter Eddie thought she was, but it was just too hard and painful watching him get worse and worse, not knowing who he's expecting that day.
"I love you," D.J. whispered. A tear slid down her cheek. Soon, she knew, Eddie wouldn't remember her... or Gloria.
