Oh my, how I've SO missed writing Trowa-Lady-Une-spy-thriller-fics. What a nice way to get back into them! I hope you enjoy, even though it is much shorter than my normal stuff. My other fictictactoes will play off of this setting.

Nikol watched Lady Une's newest, hand picked recruit, Cadet Trowa Barton, sail through the obstacle course with grace and an ease rarely seen. Nikol didn't bother to hide his disgust when he saw the teenager hit the finish with a wide margin between him and the other cadets.

He turned to see a sly smile cross Colonel Une's lips. This pushed his disgust to anger as he started to pace on the tiny balcony located above the obstacle course. His eyes didn't leave the Colonel as she turned her back and leaned against the rail.

"Put Barton in charge of his platoon's patrol tonight."

"But, Colonel, I still don't think his background qualifies him to a leadership role in OZ. Please, reconsider. It would mean he would be eligible to become a Second Lieutenant. It could look highly irregular to put a... circus clown... of all things... in charge of well trained men who have been serving you for months."

Light glinted off of her glasses as her lips twisted into a scowl. He braced himself for the verbal reprimand he was about to receive. "That young man..."

'...teenager...circus trash...' Nikol thought bitterly.

"...has out performed everyone of those OZ cadets that started months before him. Need I remind you that the Organization of the Zodiac promotes on merit, not just on birth."

"But, Colonel Une, I haven't finished checking his background. He could cross us."

Her face hardened; he could no longer read the expression in her hazel eyes. "I told you to expedite his application! It seems you're deliberately disobeying my orders."

"No, ma'am, I haven't had time. I wasn't ignoring your orders," he lied. After all, it was for Colonel Une's own good to delay that Barton character's paperwork until he had actual proof the boy was a dirty, double-crosser. He just knew it.

"Hand me his dossier."

Nikol reluctantly handed Barton's folder over to Colone Une. She took a pen from a small table and signed her name on the outside cover over the fold, thus frustrating Nikol's efforts. He ground his teeth seeing her signature, the vicious, jagged scrawl, now made that commoner a full OZ soldier, a Second Lieutenant, to add insult to injury. How she could be so blind about this one teenager infuriated him. She was so wise and strong when it came to putting the colonies under her authority. Why this one teenager?

"Don't cross me again, Nikol." With that, she turned on her heels and left him alone on the balcony. He saluted to keep himself from shredding the offending dossier. After a few minutes, he glanced over the railing and watched Colonel Une talking to that lanky teenager he loathed so much. Yes, Barton was going to make it extremely difficult for Nikol to keep the Colonel's attention.

He shook his head and stormed off to the office, wondering all the while how he was going to get the Colonel... his Colonel... to see Barton for the fraud he was.
