A/N: Vignette. I found this in an old journal of mine, written three years ago during a brainstorming session just after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out and I was struggling to come up with the concept for 'Stupid', my most successful fanfiction. This was something I came up with by accident, when I wrote Lily instead of Hermione, and decided to make it an SBLE scene instead of HHr. Enjoy! :)

I burst into the room to see her trailing her fingers over the white dress, laid out on the bed. She starts and looks up at me. A bemused smile crosses her face. "Hello, Sirius," she says. Her voice is deep, like always, and its richness surprises me, like always. "Don't you have bachelor things to take care of?"

I stare at her as I stand in the doorway. Words rise to my lips, but I don't say them. I am full to brimming with things like 'I love you' and 'Don't marry him.' Marry me, if anyone. Why didn't you ever glance to your right, just a little, and see me standing there with my heart in my eyes? No, you only ever had eyes for James. Don't you see, we'd be happy; he can't make you happy, he's been tamed, he's too predictable, too gentlemanly and perfect and boring; I could keep you laughing forever, and I'd do spontaneous romantic things, and I'd keep you in love for the rest of our lives...you're about to make the biggest mistake of your life. All I've wanted for the past three years is to make you happy.

She looks questioningly at me. Tilts her head, spilling a dark red ringlet over her shoulder.

"Just forgot to give you your last kiss as a single woman," I manage to say with a wink. Lily laughs and comes over to embrace me. I kiss her cheek. She kisses mine, too.

When I leave, I close that door behind me.
