Ripple Effect
By J.T. Magnus, "Turbo"
Sometimes, who we are is who we choose to be. A straight-A student decides that he can't respect the teachers and a brain becomes a criminal. Daddy's little girl decides she'd rather be on the field than beside it and a prep becomes a jock. Life, someone once said, is ten percent what happens to us and ninety percent what we do about it. When we don't want something to happen, we say it will when pigs fly or Hell freezes over. Sometimes, we even use more esoteric terms just to get our point across.
When Denny Griffin had asked Kelly O'Reilly on a date, her reaction had been a mixture of shock and distaste, followed by the claim that the day she would say yes was the day John Bender - and here she looked around the cafeteria of Shermer High for the most unlikely candidate - the day John Bender and Claire Standish kissed in front of the entire school. So it was that Denny was taking an amount of satisfaction in watching the events unfolding on the school steps that Monday morning before walking over to where Kelly was speaking to one of her friends on the girls' track team. A smirk spread across his face as he folded his arms across his chest and gave the bottom of the steps a quick glance - yep, still there.
"Hem, hem," Denny cleared his throat to get attention, causing the red-head to jump as she turned around.
"What do you want, you pain?"
Still smirking, Denny pointed his thumb at the bottom of the steps and watched as Kelly's jaw slowly dropped in disbelief.
"It can't be," she said in a horrified whisper.
"I'll pick you up tomorrow evening at six?"
In stunned silence, Kelly could only nod as she watched Claire Standish do her best to remove John Bender's tonsils with her tongue.
