As I sat in the back of the dark auditorium, a realization hit me. Maybe I shouldn't do this.
Miss Corcoran had sent me to spy on the New Directions. As she put it, "They've never been a threat before but they've improved so we need to make sure that doesn't change." So here I was, hidden in the shadows, watching as they danced – or in one kid's case wheeled – around the stage singing Hello Goodbye by the Beatles. I was beginning to think hello was mine and Rachel's motto.
As I listened to her powerful voice belt the lyrics I knew so well, I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as the male lead wrapped his arms around her waist.
Jealousy. This was something I was not used to feeling. Why would I? I am Jesse St. James, the star of Vocal Adrenaline with a very promising future. I was too busy for relationships and even if I wasn't, what girl would honestly turn me down? Rachel was a perfect example of that. And yet, the look in that boy's eyes as he looked down at her was swimming was emotion.
Rachel's eyes didn't share that emotion.
In fact, the second the number was over, she stormed off the stage, leaving the other members dumbfounded. I quickly got up and left, in the hopes of catching up to her in time.
Leaning up against the brick wall building, sunlight pouring down on her, stood Rachel, her arms crossed at her chest. I walked up to her and leaned beside her.
"That was a good performance. It could use a lot of work but you do have quite a strong voice." I said.
She looked up at me, a surprised look on her face as though she was expecting someone else.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"I thought I'd come and see you perform when you're a bit more prepared and in your place."
"They're going to be really mad if they see you here. You know what they think about you."
"Yeah, I know. I just really wanted to see you." More like Corcoran wanted me to see her. "I'm beginning to care about you a lot, Rachel. I was originally going to leave undetected but you left so suddenly and you looked upset, so I wanted to make sure you were okay."
Rachel swallowed and looked up at the sky.
"I'm fine, I just…I'm fine."
"Are you sure?" I asked. "That guy, the male lead, he has feelings for you too. I can tell."
"I know."Rachel said before turning to me. "But I don't have feelings for him anymore. The only one I care about is you."
I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her close. I kissed the top of her head and looked out into the distance of the parking lot. This time, my teacher wasn't there to meet my gaze because she hadn't planned this moment. I had.
