Kel and Owen were hiding in a grove of trees not far from the camp. Earlier that morning Owen had asked Kel to come meet him in the woods. "Come alone," he had told her, "Don't bring anyone, especially Cleon. Don't even tell Cleon where you're going. This is between you and me, Kel." She had been perplexed about why Owen didn't want Kel to say anything to Cleon; she hadn't even been talking to him since they had broken up last week. But then she realized that she hadn't told Owen that she wasn't with him anymore. Kel was suddenly glad that she had a pregnancy charm with her.

So here Kel was, sitting with Owen, who was bringing out a peculiar box. She suddenly felt a bout of nervousness and doubt. "Owen, I don't know if I'm ready for this," she said, looking him in the eye.

"Are you scared?" Owen asked accusatorily.

"It's not that I'm scared─" Kel mumbled.

"Yes, you are. You're scared!"

"No, it's just─"

"You're afraid that I'm better at chess than you are!"

That's a funny name for it, Kel thought. "I should probably go," Kel said, and got up to leave.

"Let me show you something first, Kel," Owen said, and pulled Kel deeper into the woods before Kel could protest. This is probably a bad idea, Kel warned herself.

"And tah-dah!" Owen yelled, pulling them into a clearing. "I made it myself," he said proudly.

"You made a chessboard?" Kel asked warily.

"Yep!" Owen said cheerfully, and opened the box he was carrying to reveal a set of rather large chess pieces. "Are you sure you don't want to play?"

Kel almost began to laugh, but still had one question. "I still don't get why you didn't want me to tell anyone. And why were you so afraid of Cleon finding out?"

"I wanted it to be a surprise for everyone, but I wanted to show you first. I didn't want Cleon to know because he beat me yesterday at chess and I'm still mad at him. Will you please play with me?"

Kel smiled. "Sure, Owen. I'll play with you."
