'S All About the Gold

This idea crept up on me and spawned other ideas. So because the games start TODAY (and if you didn't know, what rock did you crawl under from?) I decided to be patriotic and make this story.

'S All About the Gold

Matthew Williams woke up with a start yet again and sat up in his bed. He groped for his glasses and shoved them on his face. He passed a hand through his mused hair and looked around his darkened room. It was 3:45AM and despite the fact that he was tired, his heart was beating wildly and his mind was running. He turned around and saw the peaceful, sleeping, face of his lover and he groaned slightly. It was very unfair that Gilbert could sleep while he was wide awake.

Matthew removed the arm that was lazily draped across his waist and started puttering around the room. He would have gone outside to shovel snow, or play hockey, or do anything else that would help him take his mind over his current problem, but he didn't feel like dressing up and he was tired despite everything.

When he couldn't go outside, he either painted (but the smell of the paints would wake Gilbert up and would give him a headache at this time), knitted (something he picked up from England), or he folded and refolded clothes. So that's what he was doing at 3:50 in the morning.

He brought the contents of their sock drawer to the bed and started unfolding them once he was comfortable with his back against the headboard. His movements must have disturbed his sleeping companion for Prussia shifted under the covers and stirred from his slumber. He opened up one ruby eye and observed his lover for a moment, not fully understanding what Canada was doing.

"Wha' time's it?" He asked, voice heavy with sleep.

"Four."

"'The hell you doin'?"

"Folding socks."

"'S too early. Go back to sleep." Gilbert turned over thinking that Matthew would do the same, but when nothing happened, he sat up and pulled the younger man to his chest.

"Alright, what's wrong?" He asked him now that he was more awake than he was before.

"The Olympics start today." Prussia gave him an incredulous look. He couldn't believe that Canada was having sleep issues because of that.

"You checked up on the place last night and everything was fine. What's the problem now?"

"The Olympics start in Canada in eighteen hours."

"Yes, we've been through that. Why's that worrying you now?"

"Because…" There was a pause. Gilbert felt that there was more to it that he wasn't being told. He sighed to himself and started rubbing soothing circles on Matthew's back.

"I need to get a gold medal." Prussia felt like laughing, but he restrained himself from doing so.

"You'll get one. You have your teams, right?" There was another pause.

"You don't understand. The last two games that I had had… I didn't get any gold medals. I don't want to made a mockery of again." This time, it was Gilbert who didn't know what to say.

"You're kidding, right?" Matthew blushed scarlet.

"No… I'm dead serious." Prussia wanted to laugh, but when he saw the worry and seriousness that was reflected in his lover's eyes, he let it be.

"Don't worry about it. I'm sure you'll do fine. After all, isn't there some saying that goes "third time's the charm"? And if you don't get a gold medal, well, you'll still be worth all the gold in the world to my eyes." Gilbert kissed the side of his face before settling back in the covers.

"Thanks." Matthew replied before snuggling into Gilbert's arms.

"Anytime. Now, get some sleep, 's late."
