A Heartfelt Proposal

Mrs. Dashwood, Miss Dashwood, Miss Marianne and Miss Margaret all stood about out the front of their house. They were intensely happy after hearing of Elinor's engagement to Mr. Edward Ferrars, for whom she had long harboured an attachment.

Suddenly they heard the pounding of hooves coming up the roadside and recognized Colonel Brandon, looking terribly distressed and traveling at great speed to their cottage.

"Colonel Brandon!" Marianne cried out delighted and ran a few paces down the hill towards him.

She met him as he jumped down from his horse. They both bowed to each other, Miss Marianne looking exceedingly happy to see him and he looking happy but distressed at her presence.

"Miss Marianne, I…" he stumbled out but was cut off as her mother and sisters came running across the hill to greet him. They all looked very pleased to see him and their eyes met as they shared their own secret conspiracy, unknown to Marianne who continued to stare at the Colonel.

"Colonel Brandon" Mrs. Dashwood began, "How pleasant it is to see you."

"And you Mrs. Dashwood, Miss Dashwood, Miss Margaret." He bowed to each of them in turn. "I trust you are all well."

"Yes Colonel, very well." Mrs. Dashwood smiled up at him eagerly.

The Colonel suddenly recalled his mission and turned to Marianne again where their eyes met. "Miss Marianne, would you do me the honour of walking with me?"

"Of course" she replied. He held out his arm bent at the elbow and she slipped hers through his and then they began to walk away from her family. Marianne turned to see them running about and talking excitedly. Her heart beat at her own excitement, contemplating what was the come and praying that it was as she should wish it to be.

Finally the pair reached a great distance from any prying and curious eyes. He let her arm drop and then turned to her.

"Miss Marianne," He choked slightly on the words, "Surely you must have realized that for many months now, I have been harbouring feelings of admiration, no" he stopped and seemed to realize exactly what it was that he must say, "I love you Marianne."

His eyes became downcast as he attempted to hide himself from her gaze which he feared must be one of repulsion at such a declaration. "I know that I am much older than yourself, and that I, as any man am undeserving of your affections but if you would grant me your hand, I should never leave you in wanting of comfort, desire or of love."

He returned his eyes to her face and felt his heart skip a beat as he realized that her feelings mirrored his own as could be seen in the joy sparkling in her eyes.

He knelt down on one knee and took her hand. "Miss Marianne Dashwood, would you grant me the incomparable privilege of being my wife?"

Tears of joy ran from her eyes, "Yes! Of course I will."

The Colonel could scarce believe his ears and he remained still with shock so that she had to pull him to his feet. She embraced him with all the passion she could bestow and buried herself in his chest. He closed his eyes, savouring the feeling of her upon him and wrapped his arms around her body, holding her closer to him, never wanting to let her go again.

He felt, more than heard the words as she whispered, "I love you…"
