They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come

Carley liked Kyle. He was smart, and funny, and he liked her, too, which was a rarity.

Life began when I saw your face

Carley felt terrible feeling that way about Kyle, but the ugly, barren truth was that she was partially glad that Kyle was blind. If he could see her face, he would never look at her again

And I hear your laugh like a serenade

She loved making him laugh--at nurses, at himself, and even sometimes at her.

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

Carley knew that she would always love him. The question was, would he love her if he could see her face?

I slip in bed when you're asleep

Carley liked staying up late and entertaining Kyle. Once he was asleep, she returned to her room and slipped into bed.

To hold you close and feel your breath on me

She had had dreams of marrying Kyle and sharing a home, a life with him.

Tomorrow there'll be so much to do

There was always something the hospital was doing during the day to keep them busy.

So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you

Carley loved and hated it when she dreamed about Kyle. She had a secret hope of them having happily ever after, but she feared what would happen if he could see.

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

She struggled with loving Kyle. She wanted to let herself be in love with him, but resisted. She didn't know how he would react to her face.

As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful

Kyle had dreamed of becoming a scientist. Maybe he would still be able to pursue that dream, but what if it was at the cost of Carley's love? He might find a new scientific property or another element for the periodic table, but would he be alone?

You can close your eyes when you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade

Carley secretly hoped he would remember her when he eventually went home.

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up
