Prologue: The Conversation

Note: Regular Chapters will be a lot longer, this is just the prologue. Also, I do not own Detective Conan.

Ran couldn't sleep, she was too stressed. She knew that she did well enough on her exams to get into whatever college she wanted, but she couldn't help but feel nervous. After all the results came back tomorrow! That meant her entire future cold be decided tomorrow, and that was nerve-racking to say the least. In the end she decided to flip through the channels till she found something to distract her from reality.

"You're the one that doesn't get it," Conan's said sounding very frustrated. Why was he up? It was 1:30 in the morning, he should be sleeping! She was about to scold him, but then a thought occurred to her, maybe this was important. After all this time they still knew almost nothing about Conan and his family. She didn't want to think that anything was wrong or that the family was doing anything illegal but she had her suspicions. Now Conan was in the kitchen whispering into a phone with the lights off. That was a red flag if there ever was one. She leaned in so she could hear more.

"There's no guarantee it will work, that's why."

It won't work, what won't work? What was going on with Conan?

"Do you remember what happened last time?"

It was a good five minutes before Conan replied, and when he did he was angry.

"I will not be your human test subject anymore! Your explanations are getting really tiring you know? The first time I was too sick, the second time the combination of drugs was off. What about next time? What's going to be your damn excuse then?"

Ran nearly fell over, human test subject. Conan was a human test subject? Was this what the Edogowa family was up to?

"No, your emotional blackmail won't work this time. You had your chance with me, and had me going there for a while. The truth is, if that's what it's going to take to be accepted again then I'm not interested anymore. You're asking me to give what I don't have."

Ran started to cry, poor Conan. This probably meant the end of see his parents at all. It was the right thing to do, but the fact that he had to do it himself, that was potentially life scaring. Ran knew she would have to help him get through it.

"Look, I weight less than 40 pounds, I'm barely an inch over three feet, and I am the smallest person in my second grade class, including the girls. Everyone else grew over the summer. I will overdose if you continue to test on me. Your ideal test subject would be someone in the 150 pond range, not the 30s! Just leave me out of your crazy experiments and let me grow up normally. And before you ask, no I will not tell anyone about this if you leave me alone. I'm going to bed before I wake anyone."

Ran walked back into her room and sat down on her bed thinking about what she had just heard. As proud as she was of Conan's decision she still couldn't trust the Edogowa's to leave him alone. It didn't work like that, and she knew it. As she drifted off the sleep she developed a plan.
