Chapter Seven: Death and Life

~:1875, Spring:~

The few years of midwife training was quite fun to learn. Learning how to perform physical exams, prescribe the medications including contraceptive methods, providing prenatal care, gynecological care, labor and birth care, as well as the health education and counseling to the women of all ages. To get our hands on experience we had to shadow and learn the basics on what to do or not to do during preparations of and during child birth. Some of the women didn't last due to the stress of the mother screaming, witnessing the birthing, and the blood that came with it. With me, it was quite fascinating to witness a newborn coming out into the new world; the blood didn't bother me as much anymore since the war I went through before. Seeing another woman's private area didn't bother me nor seeing the child coming out since it was the wonders of life that I cherish more than anything since I couldn't have any of my own.

After graduation, I had been highly recommended by the head midwife to a couple that were five months into her pregnancy that would like to have a home birth. She packed her things since she was going to live with the couple for the remaining months of the woman's pregnancy. It was a nice two story home in New York that was an hour away from the university that she came from. She pretended to play human while in their home and 'go to bed' like any human would so she wouldn't round up suspicion or anything that may seem odd to them.

The birthing experience was wonderful, the woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Ashley. I had stayed for a little while, a few days, just so the mother could get situated with her new baby and when she should start teething and when to start on soft foods.

It was a few months later that I did the same thing with another couple but did not live with them since they weren't comfortable with another person that wasn't family live among them. They too had a lovely baby girl named Kathrine. When everything was taken cared of, I moved on out of the city a few days later due to people being a little bit suspicious of me not aging like I was supposed to. I took the next train to Pennsylvania as a last minute thing.

~:1880, North Carolina:~

After spending a few years in Pennsylvania, I moved on to North Carolina to where I was doctor's assistant or nurse for the time being. The man was sexist against me because I was a woman working for him but knew that he needed the help to set up appointments and rooms, as well as cleaning them up. I was the only woman who knew what to do and what items are what than any other who came to him for a job; I was the only one qualified.

I was just leaving work when a familiar scent caught my nose. I smiled softly as I stepped away and proceeded to walk toward the scent that was on the way to my home. As I passed an ally way a figure fell in step with me as I gently take his arm as if he was waiting on me, "Good evening, Kain, it's been a while." the day was heavily cloudy with gray clouds as the man was safe from any possible sunlight to peek out.

"Indeed, you have been moving a certain amount of times that it's hard to keep track of your whereabouts these years, Farrah Cullen" he says as I gave a small hum in return. I had changed my last name to what my brother now uses, hoping one day I'll get to meet him as the male next to me continues, "I have some news about Alroy and his family," I gave him a brief glance telling him that I was interested, "Turns out that his son had married Jasper's niece a few months ago and are expecting their first child."

My gold eyes widen a little at the news before a warm soft smile made its way upon my lips, "Well, what lovely good news to hear," the atmosphere changed when I realized that there was more, "I suppose there is bad news as well...?" I frowned a little in concern.

"Alroy is sick, Farrah." Kain said in a low tone that made us stop with me looking up at him with mild horror and surprise at the bad news that was given, "He's been bed ridden since after his son was married, his age is catching up to him more quickly than ever. It would be a miracle if he survives the birth of his grandchild."

I stood there silently as I stared at the ground while my hand on Kain's arm tightened a little when the realization of my father-figures life is soon coming to its end, "What about his wife, Christine?" I asked quietly wondering how the woman was fairing about her husband's declining health.

"Like any faithful loving wife would do, taking care of him as best as she could with a few servants helping out from time to time." I looked away from him as my eyes were blank and staring at nothing in particular as many thoughts and ideas were running through my head.

"How many servants are helping her with him at the moment and that have medical training to handle such a situation?"

"She has three servants with little medical training but knows enough to help but I doubt they would stay long." I knew he was staring at me as the thoughtful look hadn't left me before an epiphany had crossed my face, "You have a plan." he stated without question as I continued our walk with him.

"I take it that they still live in my old Texas home?"

"Very well taken cared of by the hired help that come around every now and then. They have yet to find that secret underground room to where you have stored your old things over the years before you 'disappeared'."

"Heaven knows I have a lot more things to put in storage over the years..." I gave a little smile for a moment before returning back to seriousness, "I think it's time that I make myself known to my father-figure; I think I have been gone long enough."

Kain hummed a little as we turned down a hidden trail back to my home, "Am I to assume that you're just going to waltz right back into that family and say that their 'Wren' has returned who hadn't aged a day for all these years?"

I scoffed, "Of course not, I have other plans in mind. After all these years after losing... Jasper and her 'brother', I would think Wren would have moved on and had a child with another man."

"So you would think that they would assume that she had a daughter that has an uncanny resemblance to her mother in every way possible." I gave a nod of confirmation, "...and what would you say when they want to meet your 'mother' and 'father'?"

"My father passed away from illness when I was the age of sixteen then my mother soon followed not too long after him from all the heartbreak she went through over the years. For the next couple of years I have been studying in medical college and had graduated two years ago with flying colors, following in my mothers footsteps."

Kain gave my story a once over in thought as we stepped up on my two story home porch before looking at me once more, giving me a nod of approval, "You seem to have the story well thought out. I would suggest writing to them first than showing up and having to further explain yourself of who you are."

I gave his arm a small pat before letting go of it and unlocking my door. I stepped in and looked at him once more, "I'll be sure to do that. Would you like to come in?"

"I apologize but I cannot; I have been gone for far too long and must report back to Volterra," he gently takes my hand and gives it a gentlemanly friendly kiss upon the knuckles, "Until the next time we meet, Farrah."

That night I had written to Alroy and his family and explained myself on who I was and everything that they needed to know about the 'foster daughter' of Alroy that had passed away a few years back while I was in college. I told them about a 'letter' that my mother had left me back then of them and Jasper's family, letting me know that I have a 'foster grandfather' that lives in Texas and should go visit them whenever I had the chance to.

It wasn't a week later that Christine had written back to me as well as Jasper's pregnant sister. Who was excited to meet the daughter of the woman who took cared of them when they were young is what her letter said after reading Christine's letter. Christine had explained Alroy's illness and that she would be thankful for me to come over and help her due to my medical knowledge. She also wanted to get to know me since she didn't get the chance to meet 'Wren' since she had been with Alroy.

I explained what was going on with my boss the week earlier that I might be leaving out of state to go be with my family that needed me. He understood but wasn't very happy and started his mumbling sexist comments under his breath about finding a suitable woman to actually do the job better than me. I just smiled amused at him and left to go pack the things that I would need to help Alroy out.

I left quickly and quietly through the darkness, back to my Houston home.

~:1880, New Orleans, Louisiana:~

I arrived a week and a half later in New Orleans, Louisiana. I'll be staying for a little while until leaving for Houston. It would be impossible to arrive at my old home in just two days of vampire traveling; it would raise many questions that I do not want to go through. I Hunted what I needed to sustain my needs for the week or so and saved some in my blood flask for later uses, in case I could not leave the home for important purposes and emergencies. I wore the proper clothes, gloves, scarves, and hats to hide my skin from the sun from catching too much attention to my sparkling flesh in the November weather. I still received looks but it was more like, "Why is she covered up like that? It's so hot out" kind of stare; I just either ignore them or smile politely.

After getting everything together, I was heading back to my place of living for the time being when an elderly dark but light skinned woman and her daughter, it seems like, were walking passed me as items had tumbled out of her bag beside and in front of me. People seemed to ignore or help the small family that seemed a little wary to help. The ones that helped them gave the items back while giving a small and bow in greeting before carrying on their way. The younger woman collected the items from the people, thanking them politely with a smile. Some of the items were fruit and unusual other things that you would never think to buy or find.

I glanced down at the few items next to me as I gathered them in my arms before handing them out to her, "Here, you are," I said as I smiled at the younger woman who seemed to be middle aged as I handed her the items while she gave a small shiver at my touch through the gloves that I wore. I continued to lightly smile before glancing away to look at the elder; I froze when looking into her dark eyes. She wore a traditional African turban around her head to hold her dark graying hair while wearing a dark blouse and a colorful long skirt, hoop earrings and a stoic but warm look in her eyes. Her eyes looked like she was staring straight into my dark soul; I could feel power radiating off her person.

"You're a long way from home, child." the elder woman says as I took in an unneeded breath when hearing the woman speak, it was deep and full of wisdom. The woman gestured for her daughter to go on without her. When the young woman had left, the elder turned back to me with a kind smile that still had that guarded power, "But ye, are not a child though something different; frozen in time, ye are."

"I...I don't know what you mean-"

"Oh, I tink ye know VERY well what I mean."

I didn't know what to say or do at this point. My instincts were telling me to run, to get away from this human woman with an unusual radiating power. It seemed the emotion was on my face as she smiled but softer this time as the said power lowered itself to a non-threatening level but still guarded, "Relax, child, I will not hurt ye." I held the parasol a little tightly but had relaxed the grip a little, "What's a dark creature like ye, doin' in a hot bright day like dis? It is a brave yet dangerous thing for ye to be doing." I stayed silent as I tried to gather my thoughts but she continued before I can say a word, "Yer eyes are different from what I am used to seeing among your kind; golden honey instead of devil crimson. Ye are young but old that has been through many tings, gentle, not savage. A strong will that you have but a lonely soul ye are."

I was a little startled when she took my gloved hand without any hesitation, holding it in a gentle yet strong way as we continued to walk but more in her own direction than my own. I stared at the elderly woman's hand in my own before looking back at her who smiled kindly at me, "Ye have old family waiting for you dat seem to be at dere last end but worry not, child, ye won't be alone fer much longer. Many changes are comin' fer ye, someone special; another lost soul like yerself. He will come soon." The emotions that I was feeling were filled with hope and anxiousness with a hint of sadness. The person, the 'he' she mentioned, I couldn't help but think about my brother on how badly I want to see him. If I could still cry I would be doing so at this moment on how desperate I am to see my twin again.

The elder woman released my hand after stopping in front of a home that I assumed was her own as she places both hands upon my saddened face while gently rubbing her thumbs against the corner of my eyes when seeing the glassy look inside; water that will never fall. "Ye will be happy, jus' a little bit longer now, mon cher. Be strong." she gently kisses my forehead before proceeding up the small steps to her home though.

"W-Wait," she paused a moment without turning around when hearing me, "Please, may I know who you are and how you knew what I am?" the elder woman turned to me, the familiar power still residing in her.

"I am Marie, Marie Laveau. The Voodoo Queen of Louisiana." That explains everything then. I knew who she was and to the people here but never knew what she looked like until now. I gave her my name politely as I curtsied while Marie continued to stare at me quietly, before then speaking strongly yet gently, "He will come back to ye." my eyes widen a little in mild confusion, "True mates are after all, forever." my gasp was caught in my throat when a familiar face comes to mind that haunts me everyday since we last saw each other. I never stopped thinking about him and what he was doing at the exact moment.

Has he forgiven me? Does he miss me? Does he still hate me? Does he regret knowing me?

Was there ever a chance between us?

All it took was a wise human elderly voodoo queen to tell me that everything that I wanted and NEEDED to hear.

I was going to thank her but she had already entered her home. I gave a warm smile and placed a closed fist against my chest with my eyes closing, "Thank you, I hope we'll meet again someday." I gave another little bow before turning and walking away not realizing that would be the last time I ever see her.

I left Louisiana the next day with a lighter heart.

~:1880, Houston, Texas:~

I arrived at my old hometown, where I first met the little babe that would change my life forever. To think that was so long ago for a human mind to remember while vampires have nothing but time, to do things that they always wanted to accomplish in life that they couldn't as a human.

While exiting the train with my large sized briefcase of belongings, I stepped outside with my parasol open, wearing my usual long sleeved dress, gloves, and wide brim hat, I glanced around and saw how much has changed since I had left this little but expanding city when the civil war was going on. The new electricity lampposts were on every corner of the street, heard that they were put it just a few months ago here. Some new buildings were built for new businesses and living spaces as well as the new modern cars. I climbed into a taxi as the driver places my things beside me as he got in the front after giving it a few pumping charges and asked where he was taking me. I gave him the address as he proceeded down toward my destination.

I watched the scenery pass by, people walking on the sidewalks, passing familiar areas that were still around. I smiled when seeing a small family holding their little sons' hands, reminding me how Jasper and his sisters were as they grew up while I was helping take care of them. It was always one of my greatest joys of doing; taking care of children in general since I could never have my own. I loved Jasper and his sisters, they were like my own but seeing them all grown up seems like just yesterday that I was helping them with their homework and baking them goodies. Now it was Jasper's youngest sister, Elizabeth, the middle sister, who's daughter is now married to Alroy's son "Brian" that was named after my male counterpart who was "MIA" in the war, was having their first child within a couple of months.

It was about twenty minutes later that we were driving up the long and wide cemented driveway of my old home that looked well taken cared of, surrounded by trimmed hedges, grass and flower beds with a wonderful wide fountain in the middle of the courtyard in front of the large elegant home. It seemed to be more renovated, now fixed with new attachments and rooms, garage for the new model cars as well as the barn further off to the side for the horses and carriages. The house was still the same color brown and white trim and brown window shutters. I can tell that it has been touched up over the years. The car came to a stop as the driver got down and help me out of the vehicle when the front door opened to greet me on my arrival. I glanced up and saw Christine, Alroy's wife, gasp a little with a hand over her heart as if she had seen a ghost.

"Dear lord, you could be twins if he were still alive today...!" I blinked at her and tilted my head at her in acting confusion, "Oh, terribly sorry, you look just like your late uncle, Brian... he was very dear to Alroy since he disappeared in the war." I gave a polite smile in return as she smiles back, "Where are my manners, my name is Christine Fergus, welcome to my home." the driver put down my large briefcase beside me as I paid him handsomely for his help and getting me here, he tips his cap at us and proceeds to drive away, "I hope your travel was pleasant?" I picked up my suitcase easily as I followed Christine into the home, I glanced around a moment at the new paintings and furniture; it was still as lovely as I remember.

"It was tiring but pleasant either way, thank you for asking." I looked up the stairs before looking at her again, "So, this was my mothers old home then?"

"It's actually yours now. After she disappeared since... Jasper's and her brother..." her eyes were saddened and lowered as she takes in a small shaky breath to calm herself before looking back at me with a faint smile. "You own this place by right after all. We're only resident caretakers here with a few helping hands to clean every once and a while." she gestured up the stairs, "Shall we head up to your room? We left the master bedroom off limits since it was your mothers old room, Alroy and I didn't have the heart to stay in it when Brian gave us a home to live in to raise our family in." I smiled faintly, it was true, they said it wouldn't feel right for them to say in her 'mothers' room while she was letting them use her home for them to live in; instead they used the other large guest rooms.

"O-Oh, I couldn't...!"

"We insist, dear."

I smiled a little when hearing this as we reached the top of the stairs and headed toward the direction of my old bedroom. I gave a slight pause when the scent of sickness and blood hit my nose in the next room over, mixed with Alroy's old scent. I could hear his haggard breathing behind the closed door as well as another that was a healthy male; must be their son. They were quietly speaking as the son was explaining his day and how his wife, Mary, was fairing during her pregnancy that was going well.

I couldn't wait to meet the man who was named after the 'man' that meant a lot to the older couple when they first arrived and moved into. My father figure was my main priority for coming back here but as someone else.

"Here we are," I blinked as I turned my attention back to the elder woman who opened the door to reveal an old fashioned 1840's room. A antique canopy bed that I had put in before the couple arrived, a desk and chair, a vanity with an attached mirror, a little makeup and a hairbrush upon it. Bookcase filled with old books of various genres and journals that I kept over the years of my time here. A few new things were placed inside that would have made me cry if I had the ability.

I placed my suitcase down and stepped over to the two black and white individual photos of Jasper and I as Brian in our confederate uniforms while holding our rifles against our shoulders, serious look on our faces. Those very same rifles were presented upon the wall above said photos.

I picked up the picture of Jasper with a longing sad gaze when I felt Christine step up beside me with the same saddened look on her face, "Ever since we received the letter of their disappearance, Alroy and I had never been so devastated but we had hope that they were alive somewhere. The years went by with no word of them. Jasper's parents were very distraught and couldn't take the news that their son was gone, they gave their home to Mary and her new husband as a wedding gift since Mary's parents had moved away after the wedding was finished since her husband had gotten a new job. After her grandparents had stayed a little bit longer to get everything in order before they moved out of state. Last I heard they had been living in Arkansas. They moved most of Jasper and Brian's things here in the room next to yours in tribute for them." the woman next to me watches me a moment before looking at the picture as well, "We put these pictures and rifles in here since... in case we thought she would come back..." I sucked in an unneeded breath as my eyes watered with venom into a glassy look. Christine, seeing this began to fret a little, "Oh dear, I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to bring up memories of your mother when it... I didn't..."

"It's okay, honestly," I gently placed the picture down and looked at her with a smile and warm look, "She had a good life but a sad one. I have nothing but happy memories and the stories she told me of her... of Jasper and her brother that was brought back into her life." I chuckled a little, "You were right, I do look like his twin. It's no wonder you were so startled. My mother told me that I looked like him and the little stories she told me but never had a picture of him, either of them really but she was a wonderful story teller." I gently pat her shoulder and sighed, "Well, I should unpack and see to my patient, how is he since my last letter before arriving?"

Christine seemed to relax a little at my small explanation but still looked a little troubled as she wrings her hands over the other a little, "He's been coughing up blood and has been having a little trouble of breathing and chest pain... I don't know what to do..." her eyes begin to tear up as she gently wipes on away and leaves her hand upon her cheek. I saddened at the news but gently take her arms and give them a comforting squeeze.

"That's why I'm here to help you in any way I can. I can't promise you anything but I'll do my best to treat him, alright? You must be strong for your family," I smile encouragingly at her as she smiles a little back while nodding as I gave her arm a comforting squeeze before placing my suitcase on my bed and began sorting through my things.

"I should let my husband and son know that you are here, come to the room whenever you are ready, dear." I smiled and nod while getting the same in return as the older woman leaves the room to the one a few doors down. With barely a few seconds later, everything was put away and suitcase under the bed, medical bag down upon the mattress and quietly listen to the small family speak.

"She is here."

"Who is, mother?"

"Wren's daughter that I told you about."

A small intake of breath from Alroy.

"She's here already?" the older man rasped with surprise, there was small bit of movement, guessing Christine made a nod of confirmation, "What... what is her name?"

"Farrah Cullen," small grunt from the elder man, "It's shocking on how she looks exactly like Brian; they could have been twins."

"Truly?" The son.

"Yes, gave me a small fright."

"I-I need to see her...!" Alroy.

"Soon, darling, she's unpacking. She'll be coming right in when she's finished."

"I need to see her no-" he caught himself off as he began coughing harshly into something, having a harsh coughing attack, making that my cue to make my entrance.

I grabbed my medical bag and swiftly reached the door in milliseconds before opening it quickly, "I was on my way when I heard the coughing." I put my stethoscope into my ears and press the flat surface against his chest while my other hand was against his back, "Mr. Fergus, I need you to calm down, slowly breathe in and out for me." He was struggling to do so, "If you don't calm down, you're going to get lightheaded and pass out, sir." It was after a few more moments as his coughing subsided and began to calm down, I could tell he was lightheaded with his slight body sway. I let him breathe in and out slowly a few more times before removing the stethoscope from his chest to let it hang around my neck as I slowly covered him back up with the blankets again up to his lap.

"Is he going to be alright...?" the young man asked looking a bit worried for his father, gently holding upon his mother who had her hands together upon her chest. He was dressed like a gentleman in white, blue, and gold colors, with a bit of red facial hair growing around his mouth and under his nose. His hair was slightly combed back in a short style male haircut, that was the same color as Alroy's, ginger, when he still had color. He had Christine's eyes and facial structure but had a define chin, more masculine like his fathers; very handsome.

"Your father will be fine, something must have excited him to start a coughing attack." I give a gentle smile, "You must be Mr. Alroy Jr. then, a pleasure, sir. My name is Farrah Cullen." I gave a small curtsy in greeting, "I shall be living here until I am no longer needed."

"Brian would do just fine, miss."

I smiled and nodded though didn't get the chance to respond as Alroy cut me off before I could.

"It's yer house now, girl, you inherited it by yer mother." I looked toward Alroy with raised brows in mild surprise to keep up pretenses, "Yer welcome to kick us out any time ya seem fit." I give a playful glare in return when seeing the gleam in his eye when he was teasing.

"If you knew my mother, sir, then you would know that my mother taught me what was wrong and what was right. Your family are my family, you were always her father figure at heart." I smiled warmly yet softly at him, "Family sticks together; stay as long as you like." The son, Brian, sighed silently in relief on hearing that, happy to know that his parents won't be homeless. I then smiled amusingly, "Does this mean that I can call you 'grandfather' now?" there was a snort from him and a few chuckles from his wife and son.

"Call me whatever you want just help me get well again." he says while giving a small cough in a bloody napkin making my smile falter a little.

"Well then," I looked him over before glancing at the wife and son, "I have seen these symptoms before but I would like a moment alone with him to check and make sure." With a few nods and confirmations they quietly left the room, leaving Alroy and myself alone. As soon as the door closed I suddenly hugged the elder man with firm gentleness, happy and sad to see him again as he gladly did the same in return, "It's been too long, old friend."

He grunted a little before frowning at me, "The hell have you been, girl? Making me wait with all this worry on your whereabouts, sayin', 'don' look fer me' or some nonsense." I gave a small sheepish smile when pulling back and looking at him, "All it had ta take to get ya here is me getting' sick and dyin'." I gave another faint frown about to deny it when he cut me off, "Dun lie ta me girl, I know I'm dyin'. See me coughin' up the blood? I know I won' be alive fer much longer." Narrows his old crows feet eyes at me, "I can see it in yer eyes that I am; ya seen this sickness beef'er and none had lived through it." my eyes half closed and looked down while taking his napkin free old hand. "Now, don' ya dare feel sorry fer me, I lived a long happy life thanks ta ya and given me a life I had always wanted." He left the bloodied napkin on the bed and held my hand that was on his, "Beef'er ya tell me what I 'ave, I wan' ya ta promise me somethin'."

I held both of his hands in mine as I looked up at him with my glassy venom filled eyes, "Anything." I whispered lightly to him. Sometimes I wish I had the ability to cry and show how I'm actually feeling of my dying father-figure, he's taught me everything I know; I just know that his death is gonna hit me hard, just as bad as Jasper's anger from all those years ago.

"I wan' ya ta watch over me family while I'm gone. I know one of me grandchildren are bound ta 'ave me fire ability." he frowns in all seriousness, "I don' wan' da damn Volturi gettin' a hold of me family. I know dey been lurkin' checkin' up on me family, seein' if dey 'ave deh ability." He looked at me before placing a hand upon my cheek as I closed my sorrowful eyes and leaned into it, "Yer the 'nly one that can 'elp and protect dem... 'member all dah trainin' that we did when I 'ad dee ability." his old eyes soften a little, "Me journal of me life is in 'the vault', ya'll know when ya see it. It will tell ya 'ow I trained meself with da power. It'll help ya wit' whoever gets it."

I choked a dry sob that I could never develop when hearing him say this to me, "I... I promise you, I swear." he removes his hand from mine and places both hands on my face and leans his forehead against mine, gently rubbing the corners of my eyes as if wiping away the invisible tears.

"Ye will always be a daughter to me, 'member dat..." he pulled back a little to kiss my forehead before releasing me completely. "Now, tell me what I 'ave." I still held his hand on the bed as I took in his scent, his blood most likely before responding.

"Leukemia... blood cancer."

He began to laugh without humor at the irony at his diagnosis, "Bloody ironic tha's what it is." he begins to cough a bit as he quickly grabs his napkin cough in, I kept hold of his other hand as I tell him what I told him before when he got excited as he slowly began to calm down once more. Soon he spoke once more, "'ow much time do I 'ave?"

"I think you're wife and son should hear about it as well." he was silent for a few moments before nodding in confirmation. I let go of his hand as I walked over to the door and opened it to let the two family members in. Christine went over to her husband's side and sat down upon the bed while holding and rubbing his hand in a loving way as Brian was on the other side with his arms crossed in worry while I stood at the end of the bed holding my arm, "The good news is that what he has is not contagious." the two relax a little but still tense on what the worse news was, "...the bad news is that he has Leukemia; blood cancer. There is no cure." a few intakes of breath were heard as Christine leans into her husband while feeling and looking devastated while his son was holding back his tears as his hands grip upon his arms, feeling the same way as his mother.

"H-How long does he have...?" his son asked since his mother couldn't utter a word at the moment, I glanced at him before giving my answer.

"An estimate of a couple of months, three at most. Let's hope that he'll live long enough to see his first grandchild being born." a choked sob from Christine as she curled into her husband, "All we can do is make him as comfortable as possible. There is nothing else I can do, I'm sorry..." I watched as Brian sits in the chair beside his father that I had sat before letting them back in as he attempts to comfort his father with a hand on his arm. I quietly took my things and left the family alone to take it all in and went back to her own room for a little while.

I placed my medical bag on a chair near my bed, I rubbed my arms a little to comfort myself but I knew that I would feel none of it any time soon for what was going to happen in the next month or two. I took an unneeded breath as I walked over to where the pictures rested underneath the hanging rifles and picked up the one of Jasper, gently tracing my thumb over his stoic face before hugging the frame to my chest.

I just hope one day he'll forgive me; I miss him so.

I held the frame against my chest for a little while as I stared out my window of the gardens as the day was slowly turning dark. I should go prepare dinner for them since there were no servants around for the evening and I would doubt that the family would not be in the mood to make anything.

I looked at the picture I was holding before carefully putting it back on the table. If I couldn't help take care of him, I can help take care of his family that had now become my own and do my best to my ability to do what I can to help them live.

Even if it takes years to accomplish.

~:Two and Half Months Later:~

While helping the family and taking care of Alroy, I had met Brian's wife, Mary. She looked like the female version of Jasper, it was almost scary but she was still beautiful, having that happy pregnant glow on her face. The little pregnant lady was wary of me at first but soon came to trust me and soon enough became friends in such a short time. Once telling her that I used to be a midwife, I answered all of her questions about it and how many children I had helped delivered, she was relieved that I was here to help. I can tell that she was kind of scared but excited on having a child for the first time. Her and I got along fine, explained on how her family was doing and where they lived. Turned out Jasper's sister had moved somewhere in Arlington, Texas, his other sisters were unknown to me and it was never discussed.

Alroy was getting worse as the days go by, his form getting more skinny and sickly when I first arrived. He was a fighter and was doing everything he could to stay alive until his grandchild was born then he would go in peace, knowing his life had been complete. When everyone was away doing their own thing and me taking care of my father-figure he talked about what I missed and had went on while I was away, how he brought up his son who he carefully monitored for any signs of power he might had possessed. Seeing none he was relieved and had taught him a lot on what he did and was taught as a child back then. He told me how Brian met his little wife and how they grew up together and became tight nit friends before getting married a couple of years later and were now expecting their first child.

Who's water just broke in the garden just four hours ago.

Mary and her husband were enjoying a nice afternoon tea in the garden before taking a small walk by the roses when water fell beneath her skirts. It was not long when Brian helped her into the home again calling for me that his wife's water just broke outside while I was tending to Alroy while putting him asleep an hour ago. I had came and helped Mary up the stairs and into the other guest room that I had set up for the baby's delivery. Christine came in with some warm water and a cloth for her to use to help ease the mother in labor while I had set up everything on the side on a tray at the end of the bed after leaving Mary in only her outer skirts. I told Christine to help Mary along with her breathing and her contractions while I went to Brian who was standing there at the doorway watching in worry and concern.

"Come, you can't be in here. You should check on your father for me since I cannot be at two places at once." Brian was still a bit worried as I smiled and gently reassured him, "She'll be alright, I promise. Within a few hours you will be holding your child in no time. She's in safe hands." I lightly patted his arm as he left the room without much of a fuss and closed the door. After he left I went back to Mary and explained to her that I was going to check on how dilated she was. My fingers slipped in and gave an exact estimated guess that she was about five centimeters along. I told Mary that she would have to wait a little while before she is in the right time to push, just an hour or so, maybe longer hopefully. When finding her comfortable enough, I leave the room to go check on Brian.

I was half way there when the sound of coughing and vomiting upon the floor was heard as the scent of blood wafted through my nose. I hurried into the room to see Alroy hunched over the bed with his son fretting and helping him, not at all caring about the blood on his pants when helping his father back upon the bed. The bucket full of blood and vomit was pushed a side to check him over.

"I don't know what happened, he was just sleeping then just started coughing very badly before vomiting into the bucket beside the bed!" Brian explained as I tended to his father by wiping away the blood and sweat from his face. Alroy had started vomiting blood for almost a week now but this time it had gotten worse and I can tell that his life was quickly coming to an end; he won't last through the evening.

"Alroy, are you still with me, sir?" I combed back his white hair away from his forehead to feel the warm skin, letting it linger to help cool him off with my cold hand. His tired eyes slowly blink open and glances at me and Brian who looked relieved to see him okay but it was far from being so and grunts softly in reply, "Mary has gone into labor, just hang in there for a couple more hours. Fight it as best as you can so you can see your grandchild before going in peace."

"Wh-What do you mean, 'before going in peace'?"

"I'm afraid his sickness is doing to too much on his body and is slowly failing but in a quick rate." I glance at the boy at my side, "He's not going to live through the night, he only has hours left." I looked back at Alroy again, avoiding Brian's horrified look, "Just be strong for a bit longer, alright?" he gave a weak but determined look on his face and gave a nod in return but gave a slight worried look and I understood, "I promise I won't tell her yet." I gently pat his face before standing straight and head to the door.

"Please w-wait a moment! Don't tell who what?!"

I looked back at Brian once more and gives a saddened frown, "He wants your mother to stay with your wife until the child is safely born instead on being at his bedside worrying. I can handle delivering the child myself but I think Mary would need a familiar face and help coach her through the labor." The boy looks at his father with a saddened look but understood as he nodded at me in return.

"It's horrible but that's just the way he is, worrying about others besides himself when it comes to family." he walks back to his father, "I'll continue to stay here and monitor him. If this is going to be his last hours of life, I would like to spend a little more time with him until he does." he stated softly with his arms crossed and looking at his father. I gave a small bow to the head as I leave the room once more.

I entered the delivery bedroom to see Christine helping Mary with the contractions who gave a painful noise as she squeezes her mother-in-law's hand while going through it. The older woman looks up when the contraction fades, "How are they?" I forced a smile at her.

"He's still resting, Brian is keeping him company for me." I half lied to the woman who smiles back and gently wipes Mary's brow, "How far along are the contractions?"

"About ten minutes apart so far. Be strong dear, it's almost time."

I carefully checked on how far along she was as I was surprised, "You're about eight and a half dilated; your child is coming quick it seems." I said in small amusement at the young mother to be. "A half hour at most is when you can start pushing." the soon young mother looked so relieved at the news as she lies back on the pillows.

As the time goes by I kept my ear on Alroy's progress as well as paying attention to the young woman before me, both Christine and I giving her encouragement. I checked her again after her last quick contraction, "It's time, just let me wash my hands and arms real quick and we'll get started." I quickly washed my hands and arms so I could be sterile before quickly coming back, "Alright, Mary, 1, 2, 3, push now!" The young woman began screaming out and begins to push painfully, "You're doing great Mary, keep going and make sure you take a few breaths before continuing." the young woman did so and screams out again.

"Oh god, it hurts so bad...!" she pants out as Christine wipes her forehead and brow while holding her hand, "I don't know if I can continue..."

"You can and you will, I know you can do this Mary; this will be all worth it in the end, I promise. Now, push again." I tell her sternly yet strongly, she was very close as she screams again.

I paused a moment when hearing something, oh dear, that's surprising. I smiled a little in amusement.

"You were hiding, were you." I mumbled quietly to myself in wonder as the young woman screamed out one last time before a baby girl popped out crying out for the first time, "It's a girl!" I say as I held the bloody child up for the two women to see as tears of joy came down their faces before I lowered her back down to cut the umbilical cord before clipping the end in place and wrapping her up and setting her down off to the side in the little cot, "Hold on, one more is coming...!"

"WHAT?!" the two women exclaimed in surprise.

"Mary, I know you're tired but you need to take another few breaths and push again."

"Twins?!"

"Mary, focus and start pushing again or the baby will suffocate in the womb! Push!" I yelled in fear for the child inside as the young mother begins crying but does as I say as she pushes and screams again. She did it a few more times before there was another small cry, a cough then another stronger cry, "...a boy!" I held up the other bloody child for them to see that caused a happy tearful laugh and cry from both of the women. I did the same to what I did with his sister and soon had him cleaned and wrapped next to his sister.

Just as I finished cleaning up the young mother and replacing the bed sheets, Brian bursts in panting a little with tears running down his face, "F-Father..." Christine stares with wide eyes as she looks at us pleadingly, I nodded for her to go as she quickly left the room to go be with her dying husband. The young father looks back at us as his eyes widen when hearing two cries instead of one, "What...?" I smiled sadly as I placed the ruined sheet into the laundry bin and had him walk closer to his children, "Twins... what are..."

"A girl and a boy; our daughter was born first. Our son was a surprise to all of us." Mary says tiredly with a smile and tears of happiness and sadness in her gaze.

"You should show your father the twins before he passes, I wouldn't doubt that he's in much pain right now." I say interrupting their small bit of happiness.

"What? Alroy is...?"

"He is dying and doesn't have much time left, he wanted to see his grandchildren before he finally lets go of his suffering." Brian says lightly yet sadly to his wife as I gently placed his son in one arm and the daughter in the other as I gave him directions on how to hold them carefully. I opened the door for him as he paused at the doorway, "I'll be back soon, love." he quietly leaves the room as I slightly left the door ajar and walked over to Mary who was now crying into her hands quietly. I gently rubbed her back quietly for ten minutes before the young father came back looking solemn with the children, "He's asking to see you, Miss Farrah." I gently pat the young mothers hand before getting up and leaving the small family to themselves to enter the other room of my father-figure with Christine by his side crying and holding his hand.

I sat at his other side and gave a sad smile at the tired suffering man before me, "Alroy..."

He looked at me then at his wife before giving her hand a gentle kiss, "Could ye give us a few moments, darling?" She looked a little alarmed, "I promise I'm not leaving ye without sayin' goodbye; jus' a few minutes love?" she was hesitating to leave her dying husbands side, "Jus' stand over 'cross dah room, ye don' 'ave ta leave it." he says gently to her, she thought for a few moments and nods lightly as he kisses her hand once more before releasing to give them some time to talk for the last time. "My little Ciaran*..."

I gave sad eyed look, "You haven't called me that in many years..." I quietly sobbed out with a small smile.

"Ya 'ad been one of da best thing dat has came inta me life, Ciaran, protectin' me from other vamps an' da Volturi ovah the 'ears..." I looked at him in surprise, "Wha'? Ya think I wasn' payin' attention?" he chuckled softly in amusement and lightly coughed before continuing, "Ye will always be da first child dat I ever 'ad an' ye bettah not ferget it. Find dat boy of yers an' be 'appy. Don' let me passin' bring ya down; live fer me, will ya?" he gently placed his hand upon my cheek as I briefly closed my eyes in sadness as it will be the last time to feel him.

"I promise to do everything that I can to be happy and keep your family line safe in the mean time..." I choked out quietly to him, wishing I could cry the tears I want to fall.

"I wan' ya to do somethin' else fer me," I looked at him, "I wan' ta be buried here, in da garden specifically. It's where me life started and tha's where I wan' it to end."

"I'll relay the message." I said quietly to him as he gave my cheek a gentle pat before giving my forehead a kiss.

"Goodbye, Ciaran."

"Goodbye father."

He lowered his hand back to his side as I stood up to leave, letting the couple be alone in their last moments together.

He passed ten minutes later.

~:The Next Day:~

Alroy was now resting in eternal bliss under the tree he had gotten married under.

I had a beautiful grave stone made for him a month back and the family was thankful. All three of us, plus the twins, stood before the grave, having our few last quiet moments of silence. After a little while the young family walked back inside the home to get more rest after the children's feeding as Christine and I were alone together. It was an hour or so later that Brian came back out to get his mother when it began to rain, after a bit of coaxing he gently took her back inside to clean up and rest since she hadn't got any sleep since her husbands passing. I told them that I would join them in a few moments as I stared at the headstone before me.

"It hurts to think that you are not here anymore. Although I can't help but smile with tears in my eyes that will never fall but to think of how we cherished each and every moment of our lives together when you were alive." I knelt before his stone, kissed my fingers and placed it against the wet stone, "Rest well, father, I'll take over from here." I stood up and stared at the grave a bit longer before turning to leave, to take care of the broken family that would take time to heal. Though unlike everyone else...

I had all the time to give.
