Christmas Drabble 2017

"Dad, are you sure this is the right address?" Blaxton asked, scrutinizing a tattered piece of paper in his hands for a few more moments, not letting the excitement take over just yet.

"Of course, sailor," Jack replied with absolute confidence in his voice. "I got it from good ol' Santa himself."

Blaxton's eyes darted from the page to Jack. "You did?" He asked cheerfully, his eyes widening in amazement.

"Sure I did. Santa and I, we go way back," Jack said with a smug smile, checking the last knot before turning to Blaxton. "That's why he gave me his secret address," Jack lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Everyone thinks he lives at the North Pole while his real home is in-"

"Aruba!" Blaxton finished the sentence glancing down at the yellowed scrap of paper in his hands.

Jack nodded, squinting. They shared knowing smiles.

Blaxton seemed to ponder this for another moment before his smile turned into a grin. "We are very close to Aruba right now, aren't we, Dad? I don't have to send my letter to Santa Claus! We can go visit him and I can tell him that I want a reindeer for Christmas!"

Beaming, Blaxton ran toward the helm to share the happy news with Mr. Cotton and ask him how far exactly they were from Aruba and when they were going to make port.

Jack followed Blaxton with a somewhat befuddled gaze, eyebrows knitted in thought.

"You could've at least come up with a more remote island, Jack," Elizabeth pointed out, climbing down from the mast where she had just finished hanging a sprig of mistletoe.

"When I was his age I didn't know where Aruba was, Lizzie," Jack said with a small pout.

Elizabeth laughed under her breath, which seemed to cheer Jack up enough to steer his attention toward the mistletoe above them. However, before he had a chance to refer to it, Elizabeth's amused expression turned into a frown and she gave Jack a questioning, no-nonsense look.

"Jack? Whose address did you give him?"

After fixing the beard and adjusting the red coat's sleeves, Ragetti took a step back, looking Pintel up and down.

"Ye look nice," he said with an encouraging smile that seemed to only upset Pintel more. "Except for yer face. I ain't think Santa Claus looks that angry at anyone," he said cautiously after a pause.

"How do ye know?!" Pintel yelled, causing Ragetti to shudder. "And why do I have to pretend to be him anyway?!" He huffed in annoyance before adding in a genuinely perplexed tone. "And why are we all going to visit me Mum?"
