Author's note & synopsis: Part canon and part spoilerish for 5.02 - The Bond in the Hood. Wendell-centric, on what he describes to be the 'miracle.'

A Miracle

It had been a long shot from the start. There were less than 100 anthropologists certified as Dipolomates of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology in both US and Canada. Of the top three places that he applied for an internship, there was only one that he really wanted to get into. Taking into consideration the number of potential applicants fighting for a limited amount of spots, the odds were definitely not in his favour.

Yet, when he received the rejection letters from his alternate choices, it didn't mean that the jolt of reality hurt any less. Because despite the euphemism, nobody wanted to be told that they weren't good enough. But there was still his top choice, the only one for him anyways, even though, he was largely resigned to the fact that he wasn't going to find a job this semester.

The final letter came on an innocuous Wednesday morning. The sun wasn't overly bright and sky wasn't particularly blue. The crisp pristine white envelope did not look any different from its predecessors, but his heart still raced and his palms did sweat.

With one decided inhalation, he tore into the envelope and pulled out a single sheet. Skimming the first line, he convinced himself that he was either dreaming or had a heart attack or both.

That was until he told his mother the news, at which point, they appropriately called it 'a miracle.'

"Dear Mr. Bray,

It is my pleasure to offer you an internship position at the Jeffersonian Institution. You have been chosen from hundreds of applicants because I feel that you have the potential to flourish here. I look forward to having you as my Graduate Assistant....

Respectfully,
Dr. Temperance Brennan, PhD."
