It rained on the day of Azula's funeral. It hardly ever rained in the Fire Nation, but for some reason the Spirits had seen fit to allow it for this particular day. Zuko sat by the turtleduck pond, shoulders hunched under his cloak as the events of the past week ran through his head.

Azula's dead. Somehow it just wouldn't sink in, he kept expecting her to pop up behind him wearing her trademark smirk. Oh, Zuzu, you're so gullible, she would say, I only faked my death to lull those peasants into a false sense of security! Silly, pitiful-

"Zuko?"

A different voice snapped him from his thoughts, and he turned around. Aang stood behind him, a concerned look on his face.

"Hey," he said blankly. "I still can't believe you all bothered to show up at her funeral. Hell, I'm surprised I did."

"She was a terrible person, but she was still a human being...besides, she was your sister and we're your friends now. If nothing else we should be here for you," Aang said. Zuko nodded, tears pricking at his eyes.

"She was the worst," he said. "She made my life a living hell, she mocked me, she tormented me, she tried to kill me more than once...sometimes I wished she'd just go away forever so I'd never have to deal with her again. And now..." He shook his head, almost laughing as he suddenly threw his arms around Aang's waist, sobs wracking him. Aang's arms encircled him, and he pulled himself up until his head was buried against Aang's chest. "My little sister's dead and I never even got a chance to try to patch things up with her! What kind of brother am I?!"

"It's okay, Zuko," Aang whispered, "it's going to be okay. I'm here for you."

With those words, a former enemy became everything in the world to Zuko at that moment. He hated feeling this vulnerable, but Aang didn't seem to care how pitiful he looked and sounded right now. I'm here for you. Zuko pulled closer, feeling safe, and his tears began to slow.

"Feeling better?" Aang asked after a long silence.

"Not really." Zuko loosened his grasp, pulling away and brushing the rain from his face. "Sorry I kind of lost it there."

"Don't apologize." Aang helped him stand. "Come on, let's go inside before you get sick."

"Thanks." Zuko gave him a watery smile. "I think I will be okay, though, if you're here."
