She sat at her desk, tapping away on her pencil. She was staring out the window, watching the birds tweet away. They look so happy on the maple tree by her house. She always wondered how it would be to feel that way; happy. She lost that feeling many years ago, fighting for her right to love.

Her brother, Stefan, knocked simply and slowly on her door. She ignored the sound and kept staring out the window. He came in quietly with a weak smile on his face. "Hey," he practically whispered, "Mom was wondering if you could actually join us for dinner this time." She kept her gaze out the window. Stefan sighed and tried to repeat what he said but was interrupted when Myranda's light and delicate voice hushed him. "Katrina will never be my mother now matter how hard anyone tries." She whispered. Stefan walked towards her and planted his hand on her broad shoulder. She shrugged it off and continued to look out the window. "Look," he started, "Katrina is having a really hard time at least trying to please you. But you resenting her all the time isn't going to make life easier than it should be. "

Myranda was trying to block out the words he was saying. She didn't believe him. She couldn't believe him. Katrina was nothing more than a devil to her. She could never trust her let alone be pleased with her. But to get Stefan off her case, she nodded slightly and slowly rose from her chair. Without another word, she gracefully walked downstairs and sat down at her usual spot; the end of the table. The most isolated spot of the table.

Katrina later arrived with a pot filled with some kind of stew. Disgusting Myranda thought. Stefan later sat next to Myranda and gave her a reassuring smile. She grimaced at him. Nothing could be reassuring anymore.

The next day, Myranda went to school with her usual backpack and poetry notebook. At school, the kids teased her and made her life miserable. She never had any friends because she deserted them all. She only had one person she could call friend in this school, Haven Miles. Haven is what you can call the pro Goth. Always wearing black, having bleach white teeth, and always wearing a bloody red lipstick. She went over to Myranda's locker and started observing her clothes; black skinny jeans, a white camisole, a black hoodie with the zipper all the way down, and her usual dirty black high tops. Haven never got tired of Myranda's messy hair underneath the hood of the sweater. "Did you make any more rhymes last night?" she asked a little too brightly. Myranda shrugged and shoved her notebook towards Haven. As you can tell, Myranda isn't really that much of a conversation person. Haven opened the book and read the following;

Black Tears

A tear fell from my face
Making myself a disgrace
Not wanting for it to be seen,
My weakness from within

My eyes are covered with black
Hiding the gloom at the back
Blurring my visions,
Only seeing illusions

Nothing in this world is real,
As well as what I feel
So tired of shedding these tears
Along with my heartaches & fears

All the pain & sorrow
From yesterday 'til tomorrow
Hoping it would all be over
Even though it seems forever

Haven gaped at the poem. She had to give her friend some props; this was the best poem she made yet. She handed Myranda back her notebook while she slammed her locker shut and started down the hall. "How's Katrina?" Haven asked her. Myranda once again shrugged. She had no energy whatsoever to talk about that melodramatic gold digger. None whatsoever.
