Everyone had a cases that got under their skin; they happened on occasion, the kind of case that could get under your skin and make you want to rip your hair out. He knew the case was becoming like that for her. Slowly, it was beginning to pull her under; she was tired and she hadn't ate since the day prior, he was worried.
She was sitting in her office, tired eyes staring blankly at the computer screen. They had got the guy, but it wasn't good enough -she had to be sure he'd never walk away from it. The evidence had to be irrefutable.
He walked in, juggling a pizza box and two cups of steaming coffee. She looked up from her computer and the corners of her mouth perked up -not quite a smile, but he'd take it. She accepted the steaming hot mug of heavenly brown liquid and he sat in the chair on the otherside of her desk. They opened the pizza box, each grabbing a slice and digging in.
He watched her as they dined; she ate ravenously and for some reason, it amused him. The tomato sauce dripped on her chin and she silently giggled, sticking her tongue out to reach it. He chuckled, reaching across the desk with a napkin to wipe it clean.
The bright emerald green had returned to her eyes when they had finished. She closed the pizza box and shoved it in the waste basket at the end of her desk. He got up from his seat, walking around the desk. He leaned around her and turned off her computer. She turned her chair and looked at him. He grabbed her coat and purse, nodding his head towards the door.
She glared at him momentarily, before standing up. He helped her into her coat and handed her, her bag. His hand found residence in the small of her back and he lead her from the office. They boarded the elevator and took it to the ground level. Outside in the cold New York City air she moved closer to him.
He hailed a cab for her and opened the door. She turned to look at him before she slid in. He smiled and pressed a kiss to her forehead, her arms snaked around his waist and she leaned into his embrace momentarily. When she pulled away, there was a smile on her face and it made him smile too.
As the cab disappeared around the corner, the smile did not leave his face. When she was sad, everything felt wrong, but when she smiled, the world spun on it's axis.
