. . . . . . . . . .
Jennifer Keller never thought she'd hear the words she just heard come from the mouth of the man standing before her, blocking her path.
It had to be a joke.
"Haha. Very funny, Ronon," she said, rolling her eyes as the stepped to move past him and out the door to her room.
Ronon pressed his back to the door, an immovable obstacle. "I'm serious, Ronon," she said, her face serious but wary.
"Me, too. I'm not staying here alone."
"What, you afraid of the boogey man?"
Ronon's brow furrowed in confusion, and then softened in realization that she was making another Earth reference. "No...it's just..." he sighed, finally looking away, uncertain of his words.
Jennifer crossed her arms and quirked her mouth as she regarded him, waiting for him to explain whatever was going on inside his head.
"I think...it would be better if it appeared that I was, uhm, unavailable for the evening."
"What are you talking about?" The words were out of Jennifer's mouth before her mind caught up. Oh. But why?
Ronon explained further, seeing the question in her face. "You remember our host?"
"Yes," Jennifer nodded. An older elderly gentleman probably in his seventies.
"You remember his wife?"
"Yeah," Jennifer said. She thought back to their host's much younger mate. The woman could easily be mistaken for his daughter. Or granddaughter for that matter. The woman was seated across from Ronon, who was seated next to her at the banquet. She thought Ronon would have been happy with the big meal that had been prepared for them, but he was more tense than normal. Jennifer figured it was the unfamiliar surroundings, maybe the crowd of people...
"Wait, wait," Jennifer said, scrunching her face in shock, "Are you saying she was into you?"
Ronon shrugged, but didn't move from his place in front of the door. "She hinted at stuff, yeah?"
"So, you want me to stay here because....you're afraid she'll come in here while you're sleeping and rape you?"
"Look, can you just stay here?" The tall man practically huffed. "You can have the bed. I'm...I'm not John."
The amused smile fell from Jennifer's lips then. She took a few steps to close the distance between them and placed her hand on his left forearms, her eyes lingering on the black darts of the tattoo beneath her fingers before raising up to meet his hazel eyes. "Ok," she said softly. "I'll promise I won't let her violate your honor."
A smile quirked the corner of her mouth as Ronon eyes twinkled in reply. "Thanks, Jenn."
Her stomach flipped at the way he said her name and her cheeks grew warm as she beamed up at him, outright. "You're welcome, Mr. Dex."
