It was just a simple gesture. An out stretched hand, palm-up, and an expectant look in the other's eyes. She sat staring at the hand for the longest time. Just staring. Taking it in. All the lines and wrinkles and the little bit of dirt underneath one of his finger nails. It made her smile inside. A warm fuzzy feeling taking over her body, urging her to take the hand. Urging her to take it and let it lead her to where ever he wanted to.

She didn't though. Couldn't. She couldn't will her body to move. She was too shocked that he was standing right there in front of her. Too shocked that he was offering his hand to her of all people. He could be dancing with anyone, anyone he wanted, and instead he picked her. The wicked step-sister of the west.

Wrenching her hands together in her lap, she glanced down and gulped. "No, thanks."

The hand moved then. He tucked it away into his pockets, and she was sure he was about to walk away. Instead he stepped forward, spun on his heal, and plopped down in the chair next to her. His black slacks rubbed against her red satin dress, and she shifted so that he wouldn't wrinkle it. He tuned in his seat, his arm draping around the back of hers so that he could face her.

"C'mon Case," He grins and her blue eyes flitter up to meet with his. "Dance with me."

Taking a deep breath, she let it out in a hiss between gritted teeth. She was about to shake her head no again when he pulled her up by the arm and to the middle of the dance floor. She couldn't move. So, he moved for her. He grabbed her hands in both of his and set them on his shoulders before letting his fingers trail down to her waist. They stood there just like that. In the middle of the crowd, people staring and mumbling around them because this was prom and they hated each other… Right?

Pulling her closer, she stiffened a bit and inhaled again. "Stop it, Derek."

"Case," He grins, leaning in to whisper in her ear, but his lips brush her cheek as he does. "Let's make Trashman jealous, huh?"

She blushed furiously at that. Heat flooding to her face, and her knees felt a bit week. "Der…"

"Shut up, Casey," He chuckles at the sheepish look on her face, and pulls her even closer. "Just dance with me."

What started with a gesture, ended with a dance. What started with a spark, ended with a flame. What began with heated words and icy glares, changed slowly into touches and kisses. A love that started all wrong, but ended perfectly.

"Dance with me," He whispered again, and she nodded, complying and finally moving to the music. Derek Venturi finally took his cue and kissed the girl of his dreams.
