Questions and Answers
For Saki-chan
L has taken to a very odd habit as of late…
Everyday, as they lay down to sleep, the chain connecting them clinging shrilly against the metal frame of their shared bed, L asks a question.
The first time L asks, Raito wonders if this is, perhaps, some new kind of investigation technique.
"What do you want, Raito-kun?" he inquires.
The question seems innocent enough, but he states his answer carefully nonetheless. "…I've already told you L…I want to catch Kira."
L mock-contemplates the words he has received. "So…In other words, Raito-kun…you want…Justice. Correct?" As the younger nods his affirmative, a small smile graces the detective's face. "Me too." He responds, turning off the lamp, and thereby effectively leaving Raito staring at the darkened ceiling with a baffled expression on his face.
As time progresses, Raito becomes less weary of the question; the same, typical answer rolls efficiently off his tongue without fail every time the raven-haired detective asks the question.
"What do you want, Raito-kun?" The inquiry is routine by now, as is the answer.
"Justice." He offers, and L gives the usual smile in return.
"Me too, Raito-kun."
While L turns off the lamp, Raito wonders vaguely what the point of the question is.
What he doesn't realize is how much the word "Justice" sounds like "Just us."
"What do you want, Raito-kun?"
"Just us."
A smile. "Me too."
