Chess

The Eppes- family has a chess board that has been in the family for four generations.

It has survived skipping countries in a horse- dragged carrier, sloughing through mud and rain, travelling overseas in a crowded ship, moving from New York to Los Angeles, children.

It has seen life and death, destruction, love, devastation.

Countless games of chess have been won and lost on it.

Its pieces have been flung away or moved swiftly across the white- and black oak.

Alan's grandfather learned how to play chess on that board, he taught his father who taught Alan who taught Don and Charlie, and later David. He lost to Margaret and Millie on that board, he won against Larry. He gave up trying to win against Don when his oldest son was 12, and against Charlie when he was 8.

He has long since given up being bothered by that, instead tells himself that he helped hone Donnie's strategic thinking and has his part in shaping Charlie's ability to think ahead.

And whenever the boys tease him, he will threaten Charlie with scrabble and Don with Cluedo.

Or with ice cream.

Both options work and are very willingly exploited by him.
