A/N: Pretty depressing, but I felt an urge. There's an explanation at the bottom. Read the 'fic first, though.
The Rose-Tinted Ocean
Her feet were heavy on the dusty ground. Her toes seemed to curl into the Earth, and her shoes thrust clouds of red-brown dust into the air each time she shifted awkwardly in the dirt.
She looked out to the horizon. The soft red glow of the setting sun was spanning out across the shimmering surface of the sea, sending sparks of light up to Rose's eyes. A ripple of light was cast across the water, reflecting orange liquid in her warm hazel eyes. A soft spray of salty water was flicking up at her skin, and her blonde hair was blown around her face by the wind, obscuring her view of the endless ocean.
She looked up. A cascade of light orange clouds littered the sky above her, shrouding the stars, hiding them from view. The dusk was a golden red, ablaze with the sun's red rays, scattering light upon the countryside below.
Once upon a time, this view would have made her happy, content. This life would have had her joyous.
This was her life now. The shimmering water beneath her, so far away, never ending; and the stars above her in the golden sky, hidden from view, desperate. The beautiful slow path on planet Earth. A life for a fallen angel, but never a daring wolf.
Her mobile phone rang. She pulled it out of her jacket pocket distantly. Glancing down at the caller ID - "the Doctor is calling" - she smiled. She knew it wasn't the real Doctor calling. He would never call again.
Her gaze shifted once more to the wide open seas before her, the phone still held in her hand. She tossed it up and caught it without needing to watch, her focus once more on the glimmer of hope on the flattened, reddened horizon. She thrust it over the edge without a second glance, and felt a surge of satisfaction rush over her as the distant, almost silent, plip was heard, as it crashed into the sea.
She closed her eyes, bidding the red-gold glow of the sun away, and stepped forwards. She smiled, relishing in the crunching sound of the dirt clumps beneath her. A loose couple of pebbles tumbled down the cliff face, landing soundlessly in the water. Two small rocks, too insignificant to make a difference to the sound of the howling wind or the sight of the churning waves.
Rose threw her arms out and jumped. And she laughed.
A/N: What do you think? It's supposed to be set in the Alt!Universe, after she came back with the dupe!Doctor. It's a tiny bit OOC, I know, but I was just experimenting with metaphors and symbolism, and trying to be all mysterious, since I've never really been good at that. Anyone have any interpretations? Let me know. =D
And I'm quite proud of the title too (considering I can never come up with them) - it's supposed to represent how Rose might see the ocean like the Universe - wonderful, but she's bitter about it because she's trapped on Earth. So it's like a rose - it's beautiful, but their are things (aka thorns) stopping her from reaching the... petals.
Or something. XD
Anyway, I'm not entirely sure where it came from, but drop me a review anyway. Peace x
UPDATE: Martha Smith has pointed out that this 'fic could be a kind of prequel to my other drabble 'Her Last Moments Of Peace', and I agree. So if you haven't already read that one, go read it. =D
