He's stretched out under the covers, just at that point where one isn't quite asleep but not yet awake when he hears them.

The soft padding of tiny feet. A hushed voice whispers "Don't wake him up!" which is followed by a soft giggle.

John rolls over, turns towards the window so they can't see his smile. He pretends to snore, and the laughter from the doorway gets a little louder.

"S-Sammy, c-come (chuckle) on! You need to b-be (snicker) q-quiet!" John has to bite his own lip to keep silent.

"But De", a hushed reply, "I don' think he's really sleepin' no more."

"You don't huh?"

"Nope."

"You sure, Sammy?"

John lets out another rumbling "snore". "Uh-huh" he hears his youngest say, and he can just picture Sammy nodding, long brown hair fluttering around his face like sparrow's wings.

"Well, maybe you'd better go check…" Dean replies, and John can hear the smile in his voice.

With a whoop the smaller child tears across the room, vaults onto the bed, throws his arms around his daddy's neck.

Still playing the game John opens his eyes blearily "What the…"

"HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, DADDY!" Sam cries joyously, bouncing up and down on the mattress. He repeats the phrase over and over again, leaping higher and higher with each proclamation.

John reaches out and gathers the boy into his arms, plants a squeal-inducing kiss with his stubble-covered face.

"It's Father's Day already?!" The surprise in his voice is only half-feigned. He knew it was June, but the date had escaped him. "You sure, Sammy? You wouldn't fool your old Dad, would you?"

"Nu-uh, Daddy! De says it's Father's Day, so it is!" Sam gestures to his big brother. "An' De made you breakfast an' we made you a card an' everything!"

Dean's in the doorway still, holding a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice. The smile's gone now; he looks so serious, so very grown up that it breaks John's heart in half. Dean brings the food over to the table by the bed.

"Happy Father's Day, Dad" he says softly, handing his father a hand-made card. John carefully unfolds the paper, showing a family portrait done in crayon, "Happy Father's Day written in careful printing.

"De made the letters, an' I drawed us!" Sam explains, eyes sparkling.

"Sorry we couldn't get you a gift, Dad…" Dean starts.

John reaches over, pulls his eldest into a hug, hoping the boys can't see his tears.

"Got the best gifts right here, son."
