A/N: It alwasy bugged me that Lorelai never found out that Jess made Rory go back to Yale. Here's my take.

"So, kid, you never told me what the straw that broke the camel's back was." Lorelai said as she plopped down on a chair at Luke's Diner, dropping 5 of her shopping bags on the chair next to her in the process.

"Huh?" Rory answered dumbly, mimicking her mom's actions.

"What finally made you decide to actually go back to Yale and not just think about it," her mom elaborated.

"Oh, euhm, you know, I just had an enlightening conversation with someone," Rory answered as Luke dropped two plates of fries in front of them.

"Oh, really, who? Because I want to send them a fruit basket or something."

Rory couldn't help smile at the irony.

"Oh, euhm, just a friend," she said casually.

"Paris scared you into going back didn't she?"

"No, not Paris."

"Logan?"

"Not Logan."

"Then who?"

"Mom, what does it matter?" Rory got agitated.

"Look, Rory, I couldn't get through to you, I'm just curious to know who did manage to get through to you. That's all," Lorelai replied defensively.

Rory sighed. "Jess."

"Come again?" Lorelai's eyes grew wide.

"Jess. Jess got through to me," Rory said as she folded her arms across her chest and sat back in her chair.

"Jess as in Jess Mariano?"

"He actually yelled at me, more like."

"Luke's Jess? Your Jess?"

"Yes, Luke's Jess. Not my Jess."

"He yelled at you? How dare he? That little-"

"I thought you wanted to send him a fruit basket?" Rory interjected smartly, an impish smile adorning her face.

"Oh, don't be smart with me. Save that for Yale."

"Mom!"

"Sorry. Okay, so you were saying, Jess made you see the light…"

Rory rolled her eyes. "He came over to show me something, we decided to meet for dinner the next night, Logan hijacked our evening, insulted Jess, Jess bolted, I ran after him to apologize, he yelled at me and I finally realized that maybe it was time to face the music."

"Well, with such details," Lorelai deadpanned.

"Moooom," Rory whined, wanting her mom to be serious for once.

"Sorry. But seriously, folks. Maybe I will send Jess a fruit basket."

"Thank you."

"So what did he want to show you?"

"You're okay with Jess visiting me?" Rory asked, flipping off the previous question.

"Well, he did manage to make you go back to school, he can't be all bad."

"D'you mind putting that on paper?"

"You said he wanted to show you something. What was it?" Lorelai asked again, ignoring her daughter's joke.

"Oh, you're gonna be so bummed you misjudged him. Jess wrote a book," Rory replied smugly.

Lorelai dropped the fry she was holding. "Jess?"

"Yep." A smug smile played on Rory's lips.

"Jess Mariano?" Lorelai asked, still staring at her daughter as if she announced she was moving to the North Pole.

"Jess Mariano." Rory confirmed.

"Wrote a book?"

"Wrote a book."

"Luke's Jess?"

"Mom! Yes! Jess. Jess Mariano. Luke's Jess. God, how many more things can you call him?"

"Oh, loin fruit, the possibilities are endless."

"Sorry I asked," Rory replied, getting back to her fries.

Hoodlum, Mr. I-love-you-then-drive-off, heartbreaker, jackass, Tess-"

"You can stop now."

"Ah, but where's the fun in that?"

Just a little Lorelai² conversation. I never imagined Lorelai getting mad or anything that Jess visited. And I never expected Rory to fall into his arms again. Though that last one would have been nice. xD

Anyways, review, please!

Jess is asking, not me.
