To Smile In Your Sleep

"…what are you doing?" Miyagi asked.

"Lend me your lap," Shinobu said, despite having already placed his head there. "I've been having trouble sleeping." He shifted in an attempt to make himself comfortable, but his feet hung over the opposite end of the couch.

Miyagi stroked his soft, light-colored hair. "And you think this will help?"

"I'm sure of it."

"Where did you hear this from?"

"F-From a book I read," Shinobu explained, cheeks flashing a tint of pink. In reality, he had overhead this from the girls who insisted on surrounding him at school.

"Eh? Really now?" Miyagi said, eyebrows raised. "Then why are you blushing?"

"I'm not."

Miyagi only smirked at him.

"Fine, forget it! I'm not that tired anyway…" Shinobu hissed, getting up as quickly as he had lain down.

"Wait!" Miyagi grabbed his wrist, half-yanking him back down. "I'm kidding, Shinobu-chin. Go ahead. I'll behave."

Shinobu narrowed his eyes, but did as he was told anyway.

Though, after just a few minutes, Miyagi couldn't help himself.

"Ah, Shinobu-chin is so cute," he tenderly cooed, fingers tangled in Shinobu's hair. Shinobu's eyes snapped open, glaring daggers.

"You know, I'm not asleep yet," he seethed.

"Sorry, sorry! I'm honestly done now!" Miyagi assured him, holding up his hands as if to show that he meant what he said.

"You better be, old man."

Miyagi chuckled, lacing his fingers through Shinobu's hair again.

For a moment, Shinobu looked on with the smallest of frowns. He closed his eyes as he readjusted himself in Miyagi's lap.

When Miyagi was sure Shinobu had fallen asleep, his chest rising and falling rhythmically, Miyagi pressed his lips to Shinobu's smooth forehead. Shinobu shifted in the slightest, one hand lightly grabbing at the cloth of Miyagi's pants.

Miyagi smiled. He enjoyed instances like this almost too much: when Shinobu's guard was completely down, not a hint of concern or cold indifference in his expression; the undisturbed sleeping face of an angel in its place.

Although Miyagi knew, of course, that this brat was not an angel, as cute as he obviously was. Still, the sentiment was nice.

Miyagi reached for a blanket hanging innocently over the side of the couch and laid it over his young lover. With one final adjustment of the soft cloth – he couldn't have Shinobu-chin getting a cold, after all – he let his own body relax. Though the afternoon still shown sun, he sought sleep under the influence of the tranquil atmosphere.

But just before he felt himself slip into sleep, he heard a faint murmur.

"Miyagi..."

That day, Miyagi slept with a smile.
