A Different Approach

Dante charged into the clearing in the middle of the forest. He looked around and checked for more annoying Puppets or other demons but all he found was another Hell-Gate.

Suddenly, a large serpent-like creature flew into the clearing, shooting off red seeds and launching them in Dante's direction. With his usual smirk in place and never before displayed soccer skills, he kicked the seeds back at the serpent-flower plant demon. The seeds flew at high speeds and smacked the demon square in the face.

"Who the hell are you?" She screamed at Dante.

"Glad I got your attention," Dante said with his usual cockiness. He placed his hands on his hips in annoyance. "I was beginning to feel a little ignored."

"You may jest but the kindest fate I offer is to unify with a child of mine," the demon yelled while it moved into attack Dante.

Dante pulled Rebellion off his shoulder and was about to attack when...

"PAUSE!" A loud voice boomed from above Dante and the serpent demon. It echoed throughout the clearing before dissipating.

The serpent demon froze and did not move after the voice faded away. Dante stared confused as to what the hell had just happened. He approached the demon and whacked her on the head with Rebellion.

"What the hell is going on? Weren't we in the middle of something here," Dante sneered.

The demon focused one of her eyes on him and let out a sigh but didn't move any more than that.

"Hello? I'm sorry to interrupt your beauty sleep – especially when you desperately need it – but we were about to fight here. Maybe you can shed your catch some Zs later and focus your small brain on our fight." This was really beginning to piss Dante off.

"Idiot, the game's paused," the demon hissed at him.

Dante stood there for a second, completely dumbfounded, before...

"WHO THE HELL PAUSES A DEVIL MAY CRY GAME! ESPECIALLY, IN THE MIDDLE OF ONE OF MY DAMN CUTSCENES!" Dante turned away from the demon and fumed.

"UN-PAUSE!" The loud voice once again echoed throughout the clearing.

Before Dante could flinch, the serpent demon surged forward and swallowed Dante whole.

"I've wanted to do that all day," she sighed happily.
