A/N: This can only be desribed as: I was bored. And wearing Matt goggles. And it just sorta... wrote itself. Enjoy!

People often asked Matt why he wore goggles, and his reply was always the same.

"Same reason people wear sunglasses. I like to look at the sun."

And if he was outside they would leave him alone about it, and that would be that. If he was inside at the time, for the most part, they would point it out, and he would just smile and shrug and say, "guess it is." before walking off without another word.

When Mello left Whammy's House, Matt stopped wearing his goggles. People assumed it was a sort of mourning for the fourteen year old, and never really asked him why he didn't bother with them anymore. The only one who knew better never bothered to mention it. Near knew why Matt didn't need his eye protection anymore.

And then Matt just left one day, and no-one at Whammy's would see him again until January 26th, 2010.

And when the plane came down in that empty lot after skidding down a road for nearly three hundred feet in a barely controlled manner – it turned out Microsoft Flight Simulator wasn't all that accurate – everything was black, and for a second Matt thought the sun had gone out.

And then he saw a head of blonde-hair turned red with blood and everything got so burning bright he thought he was going to go blind. He wanted to scream from the pain, and he wanted to cry from relief and god damnit he wanted to hit Mello so fucking hard for putting out his sun, if only for a minute, and for making him live in that twilight for fucking years. Instead, he just put on his goggles to stop the searing pain in his irises and set to digging the blonde out.

Three days later, when Mello had managed to come out of the mini-coma the explosion and following blood loss had put him in, Matt stared him in the eye – for there was only one visible, the other being covered in bandages, along with the entire left half of his body.

"Don't you ever fucking do that again, Mells." He said, voice shaking with the emotion loaded there. "Burn me all the fuck you want, but don't you ever, ever go out before I do."
