Hellboy shifted around in his sheets. He felt hot, unbearably so. He flipped over in his pickup truck converted bed and kicked off his sheets but no relief of cool air came. He sniffed the air. There was the scent of burning hair. He sighed and sensed the small figure next to him. It was wriggling and kicking all about her side of the bed.
"Nightmares," he thought to himself. They didn't happen a lot, but now and again Liz would have her nightmares. The first time it happened after she move in she was embarrassed about burning the covers and the mattress, and singeing the truck's paint job. She had started to cry but Hellboy had told her not to worry about it. He knew she wasn't embarrassed only about that. Liz could never have normal nightmares. When she woke up from a bad dream she awoke to another nightmare of ashes and flames all around her. Sometimes, friends, family and even strangers were dead in the flames because of her nightmares. After the first incident he purchased fireproof sheets and pj's. He also painted the truck with a new fireproof paint. That didn't stop the cats from getting singed up a bit though.
Hellboy rolled over and scooted closer to the pale figure. Her black hair fell messily around her face. Her face wasn't too round but it was youthful for a woman in her late twenties. Her eyebrows were furrowed in worry. She wore an oversized black t-shirt and capri pajama pants. She always wore fireproof clothing though. Blue flames seemed to pour off her body. Hellboy looked in slight amusement. It was very rare that Liz had blue flame anymore. She now had control over her pyrokinetic abilities and even when she was mad she still kept her flame to an orange color.
He wrapped his huge red arms around her keeping her still. Liz still tried to kick but he rested his head on top of hers. She twitched a little but seemed to relax. The flames of blue lessen in intensity. Hellboy moved some of her hair out her face, careful not to wake her up and kissed the side of her forehead.
" It's okay kido, I've gotcha," he whispered in her ear. Unconsciously listening in her sleep, Liz's face relaxed.
"Red?" she whined. Her flames turned to a cooler orange color.
" Yeah, I've got you," he said quietly in his deep voice. " Don't worry. I'll keep you safe. Go to sleep sweetie."
Liz relaxed into his arms and her flames went out suddenly. Hellboy was relieved. He may be fireproof but he that didn't mean he enjoyed being in burning heat of flames. Sometimes it was nice, especially when he went in for a sudden kiss from Liz but he could feel that she had been on fire for at least ten minutes.
Her tense body loosened and her she even buried her head into his bright red arms as if they were a pillow. That was okay. Hellboy liked it. She was all he ever really wanted and she was all his. And even if she wasn't his he would always be there protecting her.
