Attack of the Rhinestone Hairbrush
"Say it."
"No."
"Say it!"
"No!" I glare at Vicky who's smirking in an I-told-you-so way. "I'm not saying it again!"
"Come on Lily! It's just three words! 'I like James'."
"Oh you're having a kick out of this aren't you?" I say snappily.
Vicky smiles innocently which infuriates me even further. "Well, Lilykins, it's payback for my chocolates!"
Ugh. Last night, Vicky was attacking me with her hairbrush (the one with big rhinestones on it) and I ended up blurting out that I may like James Potter in a desperate attempt to save myself! It's bad enough having lots of freckles so I definitely don't need bruises as well.
"I told you it was Alice's idea to look for your chocolates, not mine!" I say again for about the eighth time. "AND she had about two thirds of it too!"
It's completely true! The image of Alice diving at those Belgian truffles is still clear in my mind.
Vicky starts tutting in that really annoying way which usually makes me smack her. Sadly, I'm not really in a position to do that right now.
"Well, even if you don't say it to us, you're going to have to tell him you know."
Wait. Tell him? Nooooo. There is NO way Potter can know the way I feel! I mean, this is humiliating! But do I have to tell him? Because, you know, when you usually like someone- UGH. I don't want to like Potter! I don't, I don't!
"Lily, you're going to have to tell him sometime." Alice says, cutting my thoughts. "He has to know."
"But why?" I ask feeling a little panicky. "Why does he HAVE to know! This is the most embarrassing thing ever!"
"Well," Alice starts saying, "He's been-"
"SO THAT YOU TWO CAN GO OUT AND GET MARRIED AND BUY A FOUR-BEDROOMED HOUSE WITH A BIG GARDEN AND A POND!" Vicky suddenly shouts. I stare at her. Alice stares at her.
"Or… um." Vicky coughs awkwardly. "That's one way of putting it."
I turn my back on her and talk to Alice,
"I don't know." I shift uncomfortably. "I just… think I need some time before I do anything."
Alice starts nodding understandingly and Vicky copies her, trying to look all wise. Which slightly amuses me.
"Well, we've only got two classes left until we're FREE for the weekend!" Alice says quite cheerfully.
A change of subject. Good.
"Yeah, only Transfiguration and Charms." I say, grabbing my Charms textbook from next to my pillow.
"Only!" Vicky rolls her eyes sarcastically. "It's two whole hours in case you don't remember. Oh, and look. We have to go now."
Oh wow. So time does fly when you're being interrogated by two insane girls who each have a purple hairbrush as a torture weapon. And I was going to do extra reading on Charms! Oh well. At least in Transfiguration, I'll see-
NO.
I'm going to hum a song to block my thoughts out, now.
It's Transfiguration and I'm finding it extremely hard to concentrate.
Because Vicky is nattering on in my ear about what James is doing across the classroom! You see? Even if I don't think about James, Vicky puts thoughts into my brain FOR me. How very considerate. Not.
"Get yourselves into groups of three!" Professor McGonagall's sudden brisk tone makes me jump slightly.
What? But I haven't heard a single word she said! I turn around to give Vicky a piece of my mind. Just wait until she-
"MISS EVANS."
Is she trying to give me a heart attack?
"Yes, Professor?" I ask in my best Head Girl voice.
McGonagall looks at me disapprovingly. "Do not think I haven't notice you and Miss Greene's… gossiping throughout my class."
WHAT! I DID NOT BREATHE A WORD.
"But Profe-"
"You will join Mr Potter and Mr Black and form a group of three."
"But Profes-"
"Now, Miss Evans."
No. This can't be happening. I can't be in the same group as Potter!
"OI, LILYFLOWER! OVER HERE!" That moron who just shouted must be Black.
Yep. I am correct. He's waving his hands exaggeratedly and grinning like a pig because he knows I don't want to be in his group. But he's wrong on why I don't want to be in his group.
As I force myself to pick up my bag and walk towards Potter and the Pig (wow that sounds like a film), I turn around and stare desperately at Alice and even Vicky. Screaming at them mentally to rescue me. Well fat lot of good they are! Vicky waggles her fingers at me in an annoying way, which she picked up from America. Even Alice smirks at me and waves. That's it. I am going to ignore them. I'm going to give them the 'freeze-out'. I'm going to-
"Lily, where are you going?"
I seem to have walked past James' table.
I can feel myself turning bright red. I clear my throat awkwardly.
"Hahahahaha… I er didn't see you, erm, there. Or something."
I am not making sense. More than that, I am using incomplete sentences! What is the matter with me?!
Wait, don't answer that.
Okay, Lily. You are not going to look, speak, and act like a fool because you… have feelings for James Potter.
I take a deep breath and settle my things on James and Black's table.
"Okay," James starts, "So we have to transfigure this plant into a working clock? Sirius and I can do the transfigurating part and you can make the clock tick since you're good at Charms."
Well that's sorted out then. It's sort of fascinating to watch James transfigure the plant. You tend to forget that he's the best in the class when he's going around, making things explode and so on…
"Done." Black says with satisfaction. Already? I look around and everyone else is still working halfway through the process. "Come on, Evans. Your turn."
I look at James who smiles at me and nods at the clock waiting to be charmed.
Oh no. He smiled at me.
I have temporarily lost my memory.
What should I do? He smiled at me. What should I do? Should I smile back?
"Evans!" Black barks into my ear.
Oh right. The charm.
I glare at Black, pull out my wand. (ooh!) Oh, shut up, inner-voice Vicky!
Okay, the ticking charm. Simple pimple.
I wave my wand over the clock and mutter the charm.
"There." James says. "Great job, Lily!"
Awww.
"Yeah, great!" Black grins as well. Wait, what is wrong with him? He's almost acting normal.
"Now, I can go and flirt with Miss Elizabeth, over there." He winks at James and me with a slimy grin.
There you go. That is the Sirius Black I have the great misfortune of knowing.
He slides off towards poor Elizabeth, and puts his hand on her shoulder.
"Poor Elizabeth." I say out loud.
James laughs appreciatively. "Yeah, well. She seems to be enjoying his attention." He nods towards Black sliding his disgusting little hand down her back.
I cringe at the horror exposed. "Oh merlin. I only thought it was fifth years that were mad enough to be interested in Black."
"Oh, yes, those fifth years." James says with quite a pained expression. Well, I suppose that's something we share. A maniac hate for fifth years. "I had two fifth year girls hiding behind my curtain the other day with little heart shaped cards for Sirius. Is that normal behaviour for girls?"
"Thankfully, no." I inform him. "Wait. They were in your dormitory?"
The bloody cows were in his dormitory! I've never been in his dormitory! How dare they! Those promiscuous little cows!
"Er, Lily? Are you alright? You look quite angry and red."
Oh. Wait. I haven't said anything out loud, have I? Oh crap. No. No. No.
"Er… James... Did I just say something. You know. Out loud."
James looks at me funnily. Well who can blame him? "No… You just went sort of red and started spluttering. Are you really alright?"
"Hahahaha!" I laugh like an idiot. Why? Why? "Yeah! Erm, I was just thinking about… Vicky."
"Oh." He looks really confused. Well most people seem to be confused these days when they're around me.
"See, she found out about the chocolates." I tell him. "She stormed the dormitory yesterday and started attacking me with her favourite hairbrush number two. The one with rhinestones in it."
James starts spluttering with laughter. He obviously hasn't been the victim of Vicky's hairbrush attacks.
I glare at him. "It isn't funny, you know. You don't know how sharp the rhinestones are! I have enough freckles as it is- I do not need bruises as well."
He starts laughing harder. I don't even know why I tell him all these things…
"James. Stop laughing. People are looking."
And they are. Well, when I say 'people', I mean Vicky and Alice. Who are staring at me pointedly with raised eyebrows.
Shut up! I mouth to them, angrily. This makes them burst into peals of laughter which makes Patterson, standing next to them, leap up with fright and make his clock explode. Good.
James, who managed to surface for air from his maniac laughing, saw the little exploding incident and starts laughing like an idiot again. This time, I think the reason for his laughter is justified.
It's really funny to see Patterson stamping around and shrieking that his new robes are ruined. I know, as Head Girl, I should be more sympathetic and probably offer Patterson a hand but this is just too funny.
"You know, James," I start saying in what I think is quite a wise tone. I should grow a beard and live in a hut, contemplating on the ways of life. "I think we have more things in common than I thought."
"Like hating on Patterson?"
"Yep." I smile at him. We exchange a high five. I feel very American, now. I should dye my hair blonde and start saying stuff like 'aluuuminum'. And 'howdy to you!'
"I feel quite American, now." James vocalises my exact thoughts.
I look at him. "That's what I was just thinking, actually. Being all blonde and saying 'aluuuminum and stuff."
To my surprise, he actually understands the rubbish I'm saying. "Yeah, I went over there in the summer and it was quite mad."
We watch as Alice keeps apologising to Patterson. Vicky's being her typical self and shouting at Patterson to get a life and a date. McGonagall's trying to mend his robes and telling Vicky to apologise for her frivolous behaviour.
The whole class has stopped working on their clocks now, ignoring McGonagall's shrieks for them to 'continue with their work'.
Ah well. It's a typical Friday.
"Soooooo?" Vicky sings in my ear.
"So, what?" I snap at her. I know what's coming. She's going to say something about Potter.
"You looked very chummy-wummy with Jamesie, my friend."
I roll my eyes and try to nonchalantly sort out the things in my bag. And avoid the subject.
But the thing is… I really do like him. Oh, you know who I mean. Do I need Vicky to spell it out for you with Pom-poms? She got them from her trip in America. I'll tell you this- I am never letting her go there again. She has picked up too many annoyingly LOUD habits.
Well anyway, I think I really like him. We've been getting on so well, and we have such a laugh together these days. And it's like he understands all the rubbish I say. And I keep telling him stupid stuff. Like how I started choking on Petunia's shepherd's pie and knocked over the dining table. Don't ask me why. I'll be the last to know.
"Come on, Lily." Vicky says quite seriously. Oh no. Vicky is being serious. Get out of the conversation, Lily! Quick!
Okay. The door's there. I'll make a run for it. One, two, thre-
"Oh no you don't."
What is this? A really crap gangster film?
Alice is hovering over me with her purple hairbrush. Noooo. Not this again.
"Sit."
I'm being forced to sit on my own bed.
Alice and Vicky sit on either side of me.
Thankfully, Alice lowers the hairbrush.
"Come on, Lily. We're your best friends. You can't just not tell us stuff!" Alice says.
Yeah. I suppose she's right. It's just that- Well, it's really weird liking James Potter after six years of hating him… It's sort of embarrassing.
"Come on. I told you about Frank when I fancied him, didn't I?"
"Too much." I remind her. She slightly flushes red and clears her throat.
"Yeah, well, we want to know what you're thinking, Lils." Vicky says quite seriously for her.
I sigh. "Okaayyyy. Just… Put down the hairbrush, will you?"
It feels so much better. Just telling your best friends everything.
And guess what?
"Do you think I should tell him that I like him?"
"YES." Vicky almost shouts. But she's smiling. "Lils, it will be great! He's already mad about you! And now you like him back! See? If everything works out, we'll have that summer wedding!"
Okay. Too much support.
I turn to Alice. "What do you think?"
"Well, of course I think it's great!" She grins at me. "We can go on double dates and stuff! You, me, James, and Frank!"
Er… hold that thought. I don't want to go and look at plants and have a long discussion about Herbology. But I smile back at Alice.
But one thing's still nudging at my mind.
"But… What if he doesn't like me anymore?"
Alice lifts her hairbrush again.
"NO, no, Alice. Stop. I'm sorry! I won't ask again."
"When are you going to tell him, then?" Wow. Vicky's asking a sensible question. Well I suppose there's a first for everything.
"I dunno. When I see him I suppose." I say slowly. I haven't really thought about that yet. "When it's more quiet and private. Maybe on our Head duties?"
"Yeah! That's perfect!"
I can't help but smile. This really is going quite well. I do feel nervous but for once, everything feels like it will turn out right.
"You feel like going to the common room?" I ask, suddenly remembering. "I want to borrow Daphne Williams' notes."
Alice shrugs and gets up slowly. "Alright."
"How about you, Vic?" I ask Vicky who's still sitting on my bed.
"Nah, I have a date. Unlike you two losers." She grins brightly and ruffles my hair. Ugh.
I roll my eyes but I can't help feeling intrigued. That is the sadness that is my life. "With who? How come you didn't tell us?"
"Well, I was about to tell Alice but then Patterson decided to make his clock explode."
I roll my eyes. "You mean you made his clock explode."
"You're very welcome, by the way. I know how much you dislike his smarmy guts."
Well, what can I do but laugh?
I can hear Sirius Black's annoying little voice as we're walking down the staircase. He's obviously chatting up some poor girl. Mostly likely in Fifth Year. "Yes, it is very hard. You see, James makes us do about a hundred push ups every morning. Yes, yes, it was very hard at first but now I can do them in about…" He trails off.
Alice and I start laughing silently. It is a well-known fact that Sirius Black is useless at maths.
As we walk into the common room, Black shoots up from his 'casual' posture of leaning against the window frame and calls out to us to safe himself. "Evans! Prewitt!"
The brunette girl he's with also looks up, surprised. Oh, I know that girl. I have caught her many many times, frolicking around, shall we say, in the Astronomy Tower.
She has the grace to look ashamed. I raise an eyebrow and ask casually, "Keeping out of the Astronomy Tower, then?"
She goes bright red and mumbles something about 'dash to meet a friend'.
"So, er, talk to you later, Sirius." She giggles shakily, still looking down, and, as she put it, 'dashes off'.
Black looks utterly confused. "Wha-" Then he turns on me, looking very cheesed off. "Evans!" He practically whines. "You just lost me a snog!"
Eurgh! That little prat. He is so disgusting.
"You are so disgusting." I state my opinion exactly. Instead of infuriating Black, it seems to make him more, well, him. He smirks at me and says, "Oh, I know. You want to make it up to me instead?"
I raise my hand, about to pinch him, but then I remember my new kicking skills. Well, here goes.
"OW!" He yells to my satisfaction. Then, he does this hilarious thing where he throws a hand over the spot where I kicked him and hops around, clutching his leg in pain. Alice and I start laughing and we do a little high five. "BLOODY HELL, EVANS! I was only joking!"
"Oh, Sirius, you really are hopeless." A voice laughs.
Alice and I both turn. Oh, it's her. What's her name again? Gemma.
I suppose she and black are really matey because they're both on the quidditch team.
Black mock-glares at her. "I thought you'd be nicer to me now, Ashworth." He starts rubbing the spot where I kicked his leg. Hahaha.
"Oh, hi, Lily. Alice." What's-her-face Gemma smiles at us.
Alice and I smile back politely.
"So, what's up, eh? Has Sirius here been giving you a hard time?" She thumps Black hard on the back and smiles quite eagerly.
She's very friendly.
"You mean they've been giving me a hard time! All I do is offer my services and this is the thanks I get!"
"Services? Yeah, right."
I seem to be melting now. It's James.
He grins at me and Alice, running a hand through his hair. Awww.
"Did you kick him, Lily?" He asks me.
"Yep." I say proudly.
"Top work."
I'm about to tell him about the Astronomy Tower girl but I'm cut off by Gemma's girlish squeal.
"Jay-jay! I haven't seen you all day, babe!"
Jay... jay? What?
I stare in horror as Gemma what's-her-face pouts at James and he kisses her on the cheek.
"Honestly. You've only been going out for two minutes and you're acting like an old married couple." Black says disgustedly, still rubbing his leg.
What? What? This isn't making any sense. I can't seem to hear properly. I can only hear Gemma's voice chirping away, all girly.
I look at Alice. Her eyes are all wide and she's looking at me with a really confused expression.
Potter… Potter has… a girlfriend?
A/N: And it ends there! MWHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry. The next few chapters are already written down in some parts, so they REALLY will be uploaded soon! Please please review! It's quite upsetting to pour my heart into this story but not get any review yet have lots of people add this to their favourites!
