So this was it. This is what becomes of the Great Melon Lord Toph, death in the prime of youth. She's scared as she feels Sokka's grip loosen. She's scared when he tells her he doesn't think they're going to make it. It's dark, and all she has is Sokka hanging onto her. "It looks like this is the end." She hears his voice, then nothing.
Toph can't see but she knows she's falling. She's going down fast. She doesn't scream even though she's scared. Even though she's alone, she doesn't move. She lets the wind run its course and take her down. Her body is twirling in midair, and she wonders if they're winning. She wonders if they going to make it out okay…she wonders if they're going to win the war. She knows it's already too late for her. She can't see anything. There's no earth down there, no escape. After so many losses hers just seem trivial. Just another a person lost for world peace.
She just hopes it wasn't all for naught.

When it came right down to it, it was him or her. He just wishes it could have been him. He can't believe he let her go. Suki tries to hush his guilt, she tries to sooth his pain – but she just doesn't get it, she doesn't understand. He just let her go. He just let her just die. If he could have just held on for one second longer, she would be here right now.
She would be alive.
"Where's Toph?" Katara asks him, and Aang looks at him. Suki squeezes his arm, but he pushes her away. He doesn't answer his sister, he just fights for a way out. He pushes past them, past all of them, looking for an escape. Sokka finds himself in the garden, in a home that isn't his, in a world that he shouldn't be in.
He'd give anything to trade places with her.
He flexes his hand. He can still feel the warmth of her small hand in his. He can imagine her face, and her crude remarks. He wishes he could tell her that he was sorry. He was sorry that he was not strong enough to hold on for just one more moment.
And there, Sokka cries.

"I knew you were lying." She tells him with a playful grin on her face. He laughs, holding her hand tight . He doesn't ask her if she's ready to leave, she's already gone. She's still scared, but she doesn't let go – she doesn't try to get away.
She hopes they know how much she'll miss them.
& over.
