A/N: A Nymphadora Tonks character sketch. Written for Cuba's Flying Solo challenge.
A sphere only has one face.
(she is painfully jealous of the sphere)
A prism has three faces.
(she'd kill to have only three faces)
A pyramid has five faces.
(she gets through five faces an hour on a bad day)
A cube has six faces.
(she'd trade with the cube in a second)
She has lost count of all her faces.
She has three names. Five, if you count some of the stupid nicknames. There's Nymphadora, Dora, Tonks. One of her awful ex-boyfriends used to call her Nymphie, and that name stuck when people were taking the piss out of her. And Nymphomaniac. Stupid bloody Slytherins had come up with that one. They still hadn't got bored of it, years later.
She has a face for each of those names.
There's Nymphadora. Her mother uses that one, and some teachers when they're angry. She's innocent, when she's Nymphadora. Her face is softer somehow, she looks younger, more vulnerable. It gets her out of trouble.
Sometimes her face is cheeky when she's Nymphadora, when she's testing the boundaries that have been set for her. When her teachers call her Nymphadora, her face is apologetic. And sometimes she really does feel sorry for acting like an idiot.
Sometimes, some of the Slytherins call her Nymphadora when she's duelling with them. Then, she's dangerous. Her eyes get smaller and she isn't so clumsy. She's serious.
(she doesn't know if she is Nymphadora, or just an imitation)
Then there's Dora. Her dad calls her Dora, and she thinks her brothers or sisters might call her Dora too, if she had any. When she's being Dora, she can get away with anything. Her eyes sparkle with youth and laughter, and she can get away with anything.
Sometimes, her friends call her Dora when they're trying to get her attention. Someone will yell it at her down the table or across the room to get her attention. Molly Weasley, her mums friend, calls her Dora. She doesn't mind that.
(she think Dora is a lovely person, someone she's friends with. She doesn't feel like Dora)
Most people call her Tonks, at her request. She never felt like 'Nymphadora' or 'Dora'. She thought maybe Tonks would be more like her.
Tonks is someone with no emotions, she has decided. She just jokes and laughs, and changes her facial features. She makes other people feel better, helps them to forget about the war that's raging on around them. Tonks is the person who has bright pink hair and is perfectly weird.
(she doesn't think that she's Tonks, she doesn't even like Tonks sometimes)
Even when she is alone, she doesn't know who she is. She isn't Nymphadora, Dora or Tonks. Not really. She tries to discover herself, but just seems to mask herself further.
She thinks she is all of those people, at one time or another. She finds it strange that she's rarely all of them.
When she sits on her own and thinks of this, she discovers more of her own jealousy. She is jealous of those people who know who they are, and can be content knowing. She is jealous of those shapes, with their fixed amounts of faces.
The older she gets, the more faces she seems to discover.
After years of trying to work it out, all she knows of herself; she has too many faces.
