"Surprise, I Love You"
Disclaimer: I only wish I was a published author with half as much money as J.K. Rowling. If I were, I'd be able to stop worrying about paying for college next year.
Author's Note: I wrote this last August, and I just stumbled upon it as I was looking through old documents. It's the shortest story I've ever written, but I believe any attempts to lengthen it would lessen its charm. It's not the most brilliant thing I've written, and if you don't like fluff- you should look away. But it's a cute little story you might enjoy.
"I love you"
"Say what?"
"I…I…I didn't say that."
"Yes, you did."
"No, I didn't."
"Yes, you did."
"Nope, you can't prove it."
"Potter, you just confessed that you loved me."
"No, I didn't."
"Potter."
"Okay, fine, I did."
"You've never said that before."
"No, I haven't."
"Why'd you say it now?"
"Well I didn't plan on saying it now…it just came out…"
"Did…did you mean it?"
"well, yeah."
"But, how can you love me?"
"What, what do you mean, Lily?"
"How…how could you love me?"
"Lily…how, how could you ask that? I mean, really, how could I not love you? You're…you're amazing. You're smart, you're funny, you always have a retort to everything, you're gorgeous- but you're neither overly certain or completely unaware of the fact, you're so kind…well, okay, you're not always kind to me- but to everyone else, you're practically a saint."
"…"
"Lily?"
"…Sorry, it's just…no one else sees me like that…you see me differently. I'm not entirely sure you see me accurately, but…I wish…I'd like to be what you see."
"Lily, I don't see anything that's not there."
"You're too nice to me. You're always too nice to me. God, Potter, when will you just stop? I can't take you being this nice to me…it makes it too hard to dislike you."
"Well then why don't you just stop disliking me?"
"Because I can't?
"Why not?"
"Because then I might like you…"
"So?"
"So I can't like you!"
"Why not?"
"Because I can't."
"And you can't because…"
"Because then…then things would be different. And you'd make me deliriously happy, and this is wartime- and I shouldn't be so happy!"
"Merlin, Lily…you're nuts!"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"James Potter!"
"Come on! It's true…So what if I make you happy? That's a good thing. And Lily, in times like these…we need as much happiness as we can get. That's how we survive."
"…"
"Lily."
"Po-James."
"Lily, I didn't mean to say it earlier…but that doesn't mean it wasn't true…I really do love you."
"…"
"I'm not expecting you to say anything back, I just…I wanted you to know. Now that I'm thinking about it, it's a good thing I said something. I wouldn't want something to happen and for me to have never said it."
"…"
"So, now, I've said it. I love you, Lily Evans. I love you, and-"
"…"
"…"
"…"
"Lily, you just kissed me…"
"Yes, James, I did."
"But…you kissed me."
"Yes, I think we have established that I kissed you."
"But…why?"
"It's like you said…I wouldn't something to happen and for me to never have done what I wanted."
"You wanted to kiss me?"
"I think I just said that."
"But not directly, and I just wanted to make sure."
"Well, be sure."
"Okay, I will be."
"…"
"Say, Lily."
"Yes, James?"
"Would you hurt me if I kissed you?"
"No…but I might hurt you if you don't."
"Well, there's no better incentive than that."
And after that, all talking ceased.
Please review, especially if you have any comments about the pure dialogue format. I've done a piece like this before, a conversation with no descriptions- and I got mixed reviews. Please let me know what you think, but in a constructive manner of course.
