First of all, I do not own Death Note. But if I did, this is what would happen. Let us all consider for a moment that in this story, Mikami will be the only actual Death Note character left. Most of the characters will be mine. Original. No, I will not insert myself into this story; I can't write a good self-insert to save my life. I present you with Mikami's Reign.

The last whisper of "sakujo" was a secret that could not have even reached Kira's ears. But when Mikami put his pen to the Death Note for a final time, the bodies began to fall. Eliminated, one by one, by Mikami's hand. His hand. He had the power here.

The laughter of Kira echoed like the voice of the God Mikami had believed him to be. But the laughter he heard was not that of a God or even of a man. Kira was a mere boy. And boys could not become gods.

Mikami waited. Waited just a few seconds more, though he had already waited many months for this opportunity.

He waited until Kira—no, Light Yagami, now—abruptly stopped laughing. The look Mikami had anticipated crawled over his face as did the pain through his body. He recognized the sensation, though he had never experienced it himself. He'd inflicted this upon countless victims before. He knew it very well.

"Mi…Mikami…you…"

And Mikami approached him, walking through a sea of dead bodies like Hades and his river of the dead. The boy growled even as he fell to his knees in pain.

"Traitor…ex…plain…"

"Gladly. Although I don't think you have much time. I tried to give you a few minutes more than the others, but I'm not sure how that's going to work." A grin crossed Mikami's face. "I followed your orders carefully for a reason. I wanted you to trust me. I did need you to help me get rid of all that would oppose me, after all…" At this, his eyes scanned the room, landing with satisfaction on the open, empty eyes of Near lying next to the dying Light, who only looked on his once-follower in speechless anger. He could not retaliate, for the all the intelligence Mikami knew him to have.

"I trust in your teachings," Mikami continued. "And your plans were flawless. I switched the notebooks, like you asked. And it brought me to this…I thank you for that." Now he knelt in front of the once-god, leering into the burning eyes. "You have one serious fault, Light Yagami; and that is why you lost to me. You trust far too much. Those who follow Kira are not always faithful and stupid…like Takada was. I'm a prosecutor, you know. I earned that job using my brain. And I have continued to use it, up unto this day."

He sent a chill down Light's spine as he leaned in closer, dropping his voice as though preventing the dead around them from hearing. This was between him and Light. Him and the former God.

"A boy like you is not suited to play God. That is why I am relieving you of the position." Light gasped. It was a moment on cue; he was experiencing his final breaths. Mikami stood, hovering over him, an obvious vision of superiority. He watched Light breathe his last and then turned out of the warehouse.

"I am the new God."

Yes, this chapter was short, and yes, the next ones will be longer. This is merely an introduction. A way for Mikami to explain himself to the former Kira. His reign begins...
