In all of her life, Aerith Gainsbourough had never seen a man so grief-stricken.
It was late one evening, and rain was pounding on the shell over the slums of Midgar, sending a hum throughout the crumbling church where the young woman was tending flowers. The heavy wooden door to the archaic building slammed open as Zack Fair, SOLDIER first class and Aerith's beau, staggered in the door with a muffled thwack as his soaking boots hit the ground.
The brunette woman wasted no time in dropping everything and racing over to the raven-haired man, who mumbled a hello and promptly wrapped her in a bone crushing hug, burying his nose in her braid.
Aerith squeaked, but allowed Zack to continue his tight embrace; she worked her arms around him and asked, "What, what is it, Zack?"
"Angeal…" he whispered, his voice cracked with raw emotion. Zack's head went down and Aerith felt something warm and wet dripping onto her shoulder.
She rubbed small circles into his back, past the heavy sword that was obviously not his, and murmured soft words of condolence, her slender fingers running up and down his back, through his soaking wet hair and back again.
After that, no words were exchanged; a look from Zack's tear rimmed, brilliant blue eyes was enough.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…
There were many days after that crucial loss that had Zack staggering into the church beaten up and worn down and in pain, and he always, always, always had his silly smile for her anyway. His wild tales of valor echoed off the stone walls like bells, and even though he tried his hardest to keep up his façade, it never worked. And eventually, they would fall together in the Calla lilies, Zack talking and letting everything pour out; and Aerith just listening.
You make me happy when skies are gray…
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you…
They held a relationship like one in a fairytale, like a princess and her knight in shining armor.
It was just a shame their fairy tale didn't have a happy ending.
Please don't take my sunshine away…
