Emily's eyes widened as the gold blinked in the sunlight of the diner, She was almost sure Jess was smirking.
"What is the meaning of this?" Emily's eyes narrowed.
"The meaning grandmother is that I and Jess are now married...Can't you just be happy for me?" Rory pleaded, Jess's fingers tightened around hers.
"No I cannot possibly, this is not becoming of a Gilmore. We haven't moulded you to become the woman you are today with your prospects to marry someone beneath your character. "
Emily dropped her shoulders and sighed while she let the words sink in the young woman sitting across from her.
Rory sat and stared dumbfounded at her grandmother across from her, she could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. Rory took a deep breath and leaned over and kissed her husband on the cheek lingering for a moment.
"I have never been so humiliated by a family member before, I understand now why my mom decided to run away and not contact you. You've not only humiliated me but my husband as well, true he does not come from money. But he works hard and has built his business from nothing. I would rather have love and respect than bigotry and ignorance. You will never learn grandma."
Rory stared down at the family matriarch realising she will never accept who she chose to be with, she understood perfectly why her mom could never really could get on with her. Rory felt Jess's thumb glide back and forth over hand comforting her.
The familiar look of coldness in her eyes, the pursing of her lips. Emily locked eyes with Jess who matched her stare.
"I see you've done this, you never liked me and to be honest I don't like you, I don't have to. But she's made her choice, regardless of whether it's a disastrous one. "Emily disregarded the situation with a swipe of her hand.
"Alright! That's enough." Lorelai slammed her hand on the table. "Mom you've made your point that you don't like the idea but you need to stop with the bullying. You can't help who you fall in love with; I thought you would have learned your lesson from meddling into my love life let alone my daughters."
"How dare you speak to...?" Emily argued.
"I think you better leave Emily." Luke threatened opening the door to let her out.
Emily stood up abruptly pushing her chair back as she stood. Rory looked up once last time trying to show her grandmother how hurt she was. Picking up her purse she left the diner with not a backward glance to the people she left behind.
"Oh Hun I'm so sorry, I know you wanted to end very differently. She'll come around." Lorelai rubbed her daughter's shoulder.
"Yeah I know. " Rory stood up picking up her things from the table.
"Where are we going?" Jess asked his wife. Rory looked at him with tears pooled in her eyes.
"I just need to go for a walk, clear my head." She squeezed his hand encouragingly and kissed her mother on the cheek as she left.
Rory wandered the streets of Star's Hollow her head in a daze, her feet moving silently. She didn't take any of scenery or gestures of welcome from the residents. Tears pooled her eyes, her arms folded against her chest to block out the cold she was sure she feel.
She blinked causing the tears to fall over her cheeks, the sun glistening over the water as she stared into the depths of the lake. Sitting down she threw her legs over the side.
"Why is everything so complicated? "She asked herself
Jess watched Rory walk out of the diner and across the town until she disappeared out of sight, the pain etched on his face.
"Jess she'll be fine, she just needs to walk it off. Believe me I've experienced it firs t hand" Lorelai squeezed his shoulder encouragingly.
"Yeah Jess, Emily can be aggressive but things will work out." Luke smiled but in his yes he looked worried.
He tapped his foot on the floor the moments ticking by; pushing his chair back he grabbed his coat and left the diner.
Jess searched the whole square looking for his wife, he ran over to Lorelai's opening the door and searching her old bedroom but all he found was boxes , he left to search the rest of the town jogging by Doose's and ran into Lane almost knocking the groceries out of her arms.
"Oh Lane, I'm sorry I was just looking for ..."
"Rory? " Lane smiled. "She came by earlier, she told me all about it. " Lane shaking her head in disgust.
"You'll know where to find her, there's not many places to hide in Stars Hollow you know that." Lane nodded her head as she saw the light come back into her eyes.
"Thanks Lane" Jess shouted as he jogged off towards the lake.
Lorelai stared into her cup and sighed loudly, Luke looked up from his accounting books to watching her closely.
"Lorelai, they'll be fine. Both Rory and Jess are stubborn people it will be your mother that breaks first." Grabbing the coffee pot he topped up her coffee throwing her a smile.
"I know Luke, just brings back memories i wish to forget. Rory is such a sweet girl that she wants everyone to be happy. They've both been through so much. "Lorelai looked out towards the square her lip held between her teeth in worry.
Jess rounded the corner to see Rory dipping her toes in the water her hair covering her face. He slowed down and causally walked to where she was sat, he sat down next to her, and tucked her hair behind her ear to see the dark tracks on her face.
"Rory, forget what Emily said all that matters is were together." He rubbed her hand with his thumb staring as their fingers locked his gold band shining in the sunshine.
" I know she just gets to me after everything, you'd think she'd learn after mom. But no she's just hasn't. "I just wanted things to go perfect for once, she has to ruin everything." She whispered she lifted her head her blue eyes staring into his chestnut coloured ones.
"Baby don't cry." Jess swiped the tears away from her face with his thumbs as he kissed her softly on her lips. Rory clung to his body grateful for his support.
"How did i get so lucky?" Rory breathed against his lips.
"As i recall i was a jerk to start with, but you showed the error of my ways. And i wasn't letting you go. "He smiled kissing her with a favoured passion.
"I love you. " Rory giggled as they both stood up and she held onto him and then she slipped into a dark abyss the last thing she saw was the panic on her husband's face.
