Know it All
Lavi always knew he would have a short life. Even when he was a child; he would sit up at night with the covers bunched around his tiny hips and ask the question why to the dark shadows of his room.
At first, Lavi was afraid of death, because no one was ever certain what came after it. Though he was usually a laid back kind of guy, he always preferred to know what was waiting around the bend.
When Lavi met Bookman, his life was given meaning. What could be more fulfilling than recording all of man's mistakes- what could be more interesting than writing the darkest secrets of the human race? Lavi always knew that humans were a species run by greed; his studies only served to prove it.
Lavi was fifteen when he stopped fearing death. After seeing it so many times, it started to lose its significance and Lavi found that he really didn't care anymore.
When Lavi met Allan, he had already accepted the promise of a short life- because really, what could be so interesting about the world that you would want to live in it for ninety years?
When the battle against the Earl became serious, Lavi knew that this would be the last war he'd see. He wasn't even sure if they could win, not matter what comforting or encouraging words he told his friends.
But when Lavi met Kanda, suddenly he couldn't accept death so readily. Kanda strolled into Lavi's life with a glare and a scoff and destroyed every single thing Lavi thought he knew. Kanda gave meaning to Lavi's existence that he had lost over the years of his travels with Bookman.
Lavi never knew he'd fall in love. He thought it was simply a myth; how could a human-so greedy and selfish- be so dedicated, so loyal to one single person?
Lavi always knew that he would die young. But as he stares up at Kanda's blood streaked face, he wishes that he didn't have to.
